Re: Kluson Users Awareness Campaign!
WD bought the brand as I understand it and the tuner ratios were all stepped up, much like what Grover did recently. 18:1 and 19:1 (new) vs. 14:1 (original) and this is significant to me. I've replaced all my Ping tuners found on Fender and Gibson guitars and enjoy a much better tuning experience. I...

Re: Tweed High Power 6v6s Output Tranny Recomedations
Hammond 1650G. 6.6K primary, underrated at 35W and with traditional (easy connection) 4-8-16 tap. This is Hammond's clone of the Stancor A-3801 that includes the 250 and 500 ohm taps that Ken used in the original Express. I'm putting a used one up in the For Sale column today actually. The leads are...

Re: Cathode biased Trainwreck
Don't do it. I did this at one time and it was all wrong. Sort the right parts, the right tubes, the right speakers, the correct power tube biasing, etc., and you won't look back. If there's a problem with a properly built Express it's the player. It's not like other amps, there's a learning curve t...

Re: Hide the new electrolytics?
Cool project there. My folks bought a Seeberg Jukebox that had an RCA input in the back of it that would put out a bit of volume with a guitar, but nothing like a Fender Super Amp I had at the time. However I think these Jukeboxes were a testimony to tube amp's longevity. Imagine how many hours they...

Hide the new electrolytics?
Most of us here are building/repairing amps so your responses will be a mixed bag I'm sure. This said, I was reading a Vintage Guitar mag the other day where they were presenting a somewhat rare Fender Concert amp covered in factory TWEED, not the typical brown tolex we've all seen. Somewhat interes...

Re: 5e8a filter cap ground question
I've built 2 of these amps and they are pretty much my go to amp, pulling two 6L6s typically. The grounding path I used is like the original Fender layout except I mounted my caps on the back side like the '59 Bassman. Stone quiet amp. And when I say this, I think all this rhetoric about an altered ...

Re: Advice/tips on a good 5E3 build
Good luck on the quest there. BTW, I played music with this very interesting cat years back, he plays harmonica, and not just blues harp. He's a bit of a character but talented. Anyway, he was a big fan of Neil Young. He actually worked as as grounds keeper/guard at Neil's home in CA, Broken Arrow R...

Re: Advice/tips on a good 5E3 build
That 'farty sound'. It might surprise you to learn that Wes Montgomery's favorite recording amp was a tweed Deluxe with an Jensen P12N. This is according to Wolf Marshall. The other info I have on the subject comes from a conversation I had with Patrick at Mercury Magnetics. Yes, they did put an MM ...

Re: Hiwatt DR103 Clone oscillating
The dual pwr supply cap mounted on the side wall by the inputs - were it me - I would rotate it 90 degrees towards the back wall of the chassis. That's just asking for trouble. Too bad I can't see what others have suggested.... In the JTM45 there was a pwr supply cap mounted internally, yep, but it ...

Re: Luigi Retro Custom
There's always someone.... :( So my thinking is these preamp tube PCBs are a great idea, Luigi. But. Looking at a Fender amp and all the amps that followed it, it seems to me that the trace that runs from pins 4/5 and sits next to pin 9 would be better served if the heater wires exited on the 4/5 si...

Re: KF Modded Super Bass?
I think this is goofy. The Bass/Normal channel is not connected to V2. Why would Kenny do this? Replacing the 5.6K resistors with 1.5K on the power tubes seems a foolhardy idea considering the oscillation potential that typically exists in this amp. Likewise adding the cap to the cathode of V2 would...

Re: Current draw of an Express
A follow up, I also borrowed a device that measures AC current. I plugged a High Power Tweed Twin and a Super Reverb into it, turned them on, and they measured 1.4A. I turned off the HPTT and had a reading of .7A on the SR by itself. So thanks again for the help sluckey and xtian.
