Re: Avatar is now selling speaker cabinet kits
I gave up on biscuit joiners once I got a Kreg pocket hole system. That does look like a great system, will consider that for future projects. I just get nervous using metal in a joint that will be rounded with a router, but I'm sure you can carefully adjust the jig to ensure no screw tips extendin...

Re: Avatar is now selling speaker cabinet kits
Thx for the reminder--have one, but never tried. This works on plywood? 90-degrees, or do you cut edges at 45 degrees? I've used biscuits on high grade plywood, standard 90 degree edges. Kind of the same thing as a dowel reinforcement, but quicker. Also all of these cabs were tolexed so the joint w...

Re: What's Best for Recoating EVM-12L Cloth Surround?
I used the stuff JMFahey suggested, and it works great. That's my go-to stuff now. However another thing that looks promising is FlexSeal Clear spray, you can buy it for around $12 a can at your local WalMart. The paintable sealant can leave brush marks, and I'm hoping the FlexSeal spray will look b...

Re: Avatar is now selling speaker cabinet kits
For such a cab assembly, might be worth investing in a biscuit joiner. I made my last few cabs with biscuit joints and it worked great. Makes for a solid easy joint, MUCH faster and easier than any sort of dovetail or finger joint, and no metal bits to eat your router bit.

Re: Did my 1st re-cone
I've been playing around with reconing lately, it's an extremely fun hobby as it isn't expensive and can get very interesting results. It's also not very difficult. Parts are relatively cheap if you buy them from Weber or learn to reuse parts removed from a bad speaker (you can reuse spiders and dus...

Re: Hopefully Paying It Forward
IMHO the power transformer is possibly the least important major amp component as far as tone goes. If a PT can provide the proper voltages and currents, and does not have too much or too little sag during transients, it should work OK in most any particular amp. I'm used to thinking of two differen...

Re: And then there's this....
The amp is built on the same chassis exact platform as an original ODS. It is just a taller front and rear panel on the same pan. A new main board and a new PC board for the bias adjustment and test station. Not sure what you mean by it's construction somehow indicating it would be at a lower price...

Re: And then there's this....
Very nice amp. Judging from the chassis construction, is it possible that this amp is aimed at a lower price point than the standard ODS?
The only reason I built a D clone was because I couldn't afford a Fuchs ODS. The sounds in the demo video on youtube with the LP Firebrand (?) were captivating.

Re: anyone been inside a bludo robben ford amp, or the real 102?
I just finished a 102, and am willing to accept it isn't near the original, but all the tonal goodies I was wanting from the amp that I heard in Ford's tone (warmth, smoothness, clarity, dynamics, pop in the notes, the snarl that happens with the bridge pickup when he digs in) are present in my 102....

Re: Converting my D'lite to a 50W #102
I posted some unclear information in my above post; the grounded center tap rectifier I referred to is better called a full wave rectifier. Just calling a rectifier a "center tap rectifier" is a bit misleading as some amp makers (Marshall in particular) use center tapped transformers with bridge rec...

Re: Converting my D'lite to a 50W #102
The rectifier circuit you will use will depend on the power transformer. You should copy the basic topology used in the original amp your PT came from, if it is an old Bassman the rectifer will most likely be identical to the one in this D'Lite schematic: http://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2...

Re: Dumbleator build, help with strange voltages
As 67plexi noted, this layout has the polarity backwards of the two 47uF caps in the voltage doubler, as does norburybrook's build. If they got hot enough to melt glue, they are indeed dead and should be replaced, I wouldn't trust them. Sorry to see this, it's frustrating. But it is good they didn't...

Re: Dumbleator build, help with strange voltages
Be sure and double/triple check the wiring of the diodes and the input of the power supply in general. If the diodes are backwards that will give you a negative voltage, and if the reverse negative voltage is applied to the positive terminals of the power supply caps, they are possibly damaged or de...

PI balance setting adventures (what test freq to use)
Hi all, did a bit of testing recently on an ODS build phase inverter (setting the balance), would be interested in your views on the issue. According to the PI balance sticky, HAD recommended using the Ampeg SVT balance set method, which is basically to set the amp with a 40Hz tone at 1/2 rated powe...

Re: can't quite cure a V1a ground loop
It might be worth to try pulling the high impedance (grid) wires away from the chassis and see if that makes a difference. Marshalls are notorious for induced hum to wires near the chassis. Also double check the coax shield connections, it may be possible that one of those isn't making good connecti...
