Re: Adding Labels to Home-Built Gear

I use Front Panel Designer from Front Panel Express http://www.frontpanelexpress.com/ to design. Down load design as a pdf file, take file to office printer service, print on card stock and install under plexi glass. Works for me.

Re: Hook-up Wires

"Fischer also used solid core wiring because he believed that braided wires create phasing issues between the input and output signals of the amp." And then there is the color of the outer jacket that one must also consider.

Re: building etiquette

Take a look inside some of the old amps. Not very neat at all. Some you wonder how they ever worked.

Re: Recommend me the Blackface type amp grounding method please.

This works well....Don't recommend attaching to back of pots, run a buss bar instead.and a separate ground connection for the ac incoming power. ...http://el34world.com/charts/grounds.htm

Re: Wire types, uses and sources...

Right or wrong when I look for wire size amp rating for wiring in chassis I go to the ARRL Radio Hand book..It rates 20 ga. as being good for 11 amps.

Re: Wire types, uses and sources...

I use 20 ga. solid core, 600 volt on every thing except the speaker. Speaker I use stranded....McMaster-Carr is a good source.

Re: Need help deciding on my next amp build...

Glad you like the amp. Have fun with it...I think that Marshall's 18 watt amps were short lived. Maybe '65 through '69 then the higher power amps took over.

Re: Need help deciding on my next amp build...

That is the OT that Classictone recommends for the 18 watt. It will be good. You can find several test of this amp on youtube if you do a search...You my want to take a look at the www.18watt.com forum. You have to be a member but all you have to do is sign up. It is simple. Re: Need help deciding on my next amp build...

The type of rectifier you use will make a difference...I find that about 360 VDC is a good place to be for the Plate voltage of the EL84's

Re: Need help deciding on my next amp build...

I used Magnetic Components Classictone transformers....290-0-290 volt, 120 ma for the power and approximately 8K primary for the OT. You could also match up at set of Hammond's for this amp. The Heyboer's are said to be reversed engineered from the originals but they are a little pricey for me.

Give me a day or two. I will have to get into my files and see. Know that I did not use Heyboer xformers.
