Re: Ever heard this guy. It is pretty amazing
I've seen John play many times locally as he's based in Leeds, I saw him do a clinic at Leeds College of Music a few years ago and he always bought his strings from the shop I worked in, genuinely nice guy and amazing talent.

Re: What capacitors sound like..
The Solen Metalized Polypropylene are nice we use them at Wienbrock amps and they deffo sound better than most caps I've tried. I do like the 6PS (Polyester film foil) and LCR PC/HV/S/WF (Polyprop film foil) but they're about as different as you can get from each other in terms of tone, depends what...

Re: Express Amp - Alternate Brite Cap Values
I've found moving the tonestack treble and bass leads further apart tends to effect the amp as does the two wires to the power tube control grids from the back end of the long tail pair. I'd suggest playing with the spacing of these wires before giving up on the 500pF. I really dig the 500pF with th...

Re: Why is the Express rated at 36 watts?
I made an express with that 240 edcor transformer you speak of RJ sent it by accident instead of a 300-0-300..
Used it with a Pacific 6k6.
Never said anything but it sure as hell sounded fine to me!

Re: Best Express Output Transformer.
I've got the Edcor, Pacific, Older Heyboer and Newer Heyboer All to do a demo clip for RJ Guitars, he sent me them some time ago, not managed to get around to recording the clips yet but the amp is in the studio and is being used with clip connectors to connect in the different OTs ready to do some ...

Re: PI input cap Question
about 4n7 is sufficient to get full frequency through.
Although 100nF does sound much more sluggish and has a compression to it that comes along with carrying all the sub sonic mush along with it.
Personally I prefer the default value of 100nF here on the Express and Liverpool.

should be fine like that, just make sure you've got a good high wattage quality resistor in place.

Re: xicon styrene caps
I've used LCR Polystyrene caps in some builds and I do think they sound very smooth and clear.
Mica can sound a bit harsh sometimes.
But my favourite is ceramic.. cheaper the better haha.

Re: CORNELL DUBILIER - TC74
man i just use what ever is cheapest that week! Vishay, nichicon, f&t, Philips..
They all sound very similar! I find the circuit is more important than cap brands. Especially in new designs. I have no interest in being vintage correct. Waste of my time and money.

Re: Liverpool Output Transformer Selection
Tried both and in Liverpool's I much prefer 6k6 which tends to sound a little more compressed, the clean to mean thing is improved over 5k2. Get the Edcor from RJ Guitars with both taps, this is one fantastic sounding OT i've got every OT RJ supplies. The Edcor, Heyboer, Pacific and old Dual Primary...
