I haven't tried it, but one idea I've had was to do a Tube Driver circuit in front of the amp, which I guess could replace the FET circuit. Only problem is all of the additional knobs...

My guess would be that he ran out of 1 ohm resistors so he used 2 ohms. You don't even need a resistor there unless you are using the test points.

You should still use a 1 ohm resistor there, from the cathode of each power tube to ground. This value just simplifies the math used to figure out cathode current.
