Re: is this the answer to our dreams-Boss Waza tube expander

My dream is to be able to play as loud as I want whenever I want, but yeah that thing is pretty cool for all it does. I've been messing around with effects they way Larry Carlton does it, post amp similar to what you would do in a studio, this thing will do all that and more in one box.

Re: Wow! Monster Single ended amp

Single ended OPTs have a gap in the iron to deal with DC saturation. I second R.G.s love of the 6AQ5 single ended, I highly recommend the following recipe; Build a dearmond R5 (same as the R5T but without the tremolo, there's schematics floating around here and other places) but substitute the 6V6 w...

Re: Choice of wood finish?

For walnut, french polish is the way to go. You shouldn't set hot or cold drinks or cigarettes on your amp anyways, if you need to use an amp like a booth at mcdonalds, use a coaster, or stick to tolex. A can of Zinsser amber shellac (if you don't have sapwood clear is fine), olive oil from my kitch...

Re: Slipping farther away from the light...

That could be an interesting way to evaluate amp tweaks, profile each change so you can A/B/C the snapshots instantaneously and not have to rely on sonic memory so much.

Re: Slipping farther away from the light...

When I'm writing stuff and I don't want to set up mics, I often use the USB out on my Fender Mustang IV. I sold a couple pedals and bought the stereo head to mess around with a wet/dry/wet thing, that didn't work out but I found it so handy I turned it into a combo for a while. It was in a heavy par...

Re: Cabinet Miter Joints

Here's the MTM (more time than money) method. Lots of work and set-up, but probably about the same as doing finger joints time wise. Dadoing in the baffle at the same depth as the inner slot and glueing it all up makes for a really strong box. One of these days I'll have to get a router table so I c...

Re: TSTT (tone stack think tank)

My dumblesque amp is basically a 70's pre into a 183 OD and power section, except there's a hiwatt tone stack at the entrance of the OD section fed off the plate of V1B and the OD relay, and the treble wiper goes to a 250k OD trim pot (same place as the Master vol on the Hiwatt schem). Both tone sta...

Hey Xtian-
Cool amp!
I've got an AO-43 OPT if you want it. Shoot me a PM.

I had a baldwin from a leslie tone cab that did the same exact thing, from a scream to a whisper.

Re: What would you do?

I alway try and insure (at my cost) stuff I ship for the purchase price. That way you can at least give them their money back. It costs a bit extra but gives both sides of the deal a little piece of mind. Haven't had to do a claim yet, knock on wood.

Re: Reliced Suede ODS how to...

Most chaps would be offended by a comment like that, but I'm willing to turn the other cheek. The guy in the video shows how to do the oval cuts for the back panel too, and good tips on glue-up to avoid discoloring the suede. I think no relic job would be complete without a coffee ring and cigarette...

Re: Reliced Suede ODS how to...

I never got why people called them ass-less chaps, is there an assed variety or would those just be pants?

My daughter's got a whole roll of this crazy royal purple suede like that overdrive reverb that's out there, and another roll of bright red, I'm hoping she'll give me enough to do a couple amps.

Re: PM tubes?

Agreed. One thing for JJ, at least they have what I guess you could call a "data sheet" for their tubes. I wish the other companies would get on board with that. I don't trust a marketing department to tell me how a tube sounds, that's a roll of the dice, but at least show me how it should measure a...
