I'd try a 12AY7 in it (d'lator) prior to any radical circuit changes....that's what I use in mine, and it's quite sweet, even for PP/ traditional use. Not tried it with SE, but it will definitely whack down the gain in a non-invasive manner. If you don't have an AY, then put any lower mu 12A_7 in to...

I've looked into using this type of fastener and couldn't find any that would accommodate the necessary thickness of metal. They are made of vey hard steel and can't be forced.
