Re: TW Express clone with a Post PI Master Vol...

I've got a LarMar Type-II in my Express clone, and while I agree that no MV sounds 'great', I AM happy with this one in THIS build. (There are some amps that it absolutely DOESN'T 'work' in - like a black-face Fender style circuit...) I use it to 'take the edge off' - meaning dial the volume back ju...

http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/NKK-Switches/HS13Y-RO/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMvNbjZ2WlReYkpV6FM9qs2Sq99ujwMfZJo%3d Good choice. I buy that switch in quantity and use it in every single build I do that requires a selector switch. I even used one to replace the scary impedance selector on my old metal-pane...

Re: Liverpool Output Transformer Selection

Correct Same type I believe it is beefy enough Rated at 3A @ 250 VAC and 5A @ 125VAC I'd like to get others' input on the ratings Markus You didn't mention it, but I'm guessing that you're using the switch on the OT secondaries, right? That switch rating is MORE than sufficient for use on the secon...

Re: First Rocket...some questions

Two 70uF in series makes 35uF. Two 80uF in series is 40uF. The spec sheets for GZ34 say 60uF is maximum (to limit peak current), but exceeding that by some amount (two 40uF are shown in parallel for 80uF in the Rocket schematic) probably only means a little reduction in life. TaDa! A little theory ...

Re: First Rocket...some questions

With a GZ34 you need to limit the total filtering so I wouldn't go with the larger caps on main filtering. I believe Normster used 40-47uf there. This has always had me scratching my head when I read this here - Go look at the AA165 and AA1069 schemos for Fender Pro Reverbs - GZ34 and 5U4 rectos, r...

Re: 68 SF Bassman volume loss

Cool, Mike - I wasn't trying to force your hand in any way; it's more trying to have your trouble-shooting be based on some hard facts about what your amp is doing. I get it about your newness to this - being 'new' doesn't mean 'don't proceed'. There are some good tips here already - get a clip-on g...

Re: 68 SF Bassman volume loss

At the risk of sounding repetitive, have you taken a full set of voltage readings yet? Voltage readings are a REALLY basic, informative diagnostic tool, and can be more revealing than your eyes can. 8) Without voltage readings, you're on an Easter egg hunt. Take a set of readings when you first fire...

Re: What materials and thicknesses will work for eyelet board

Myself, and a WHOLELOTTA other people, use Garolite board material, available from McMaster in many thicknesses and colors. Works great and fairly cheap. It's murder on cutting tools and drill bits though. LOL! I got an inexpensive water table tile cutter from Harbor Freight, and have used that to c...

Re: 68 SF Bassman volume loss

You probably know this already, but just in case... don't assume that a 'visually fine' capacitor (or anything else) implies a 'functionally fine' capacitor. I suspect the caps right away, based on what you're describing. A good place to start with diagnostics is a full set of voltage readings. Got ...

Re: No output

From what I've read now in further posts (haven't looked at your pictures), it sounds like you've taken other actions that accomplish the same thing as swapping the polarity of the OT secondary. So you've got the right stuff done, you've just taken the complicated way to get there. When I've ...

Re: No output

Good Heavens.... I would not, in a Million years, have ever thought that swapping the secondary would matter. I have it wired per the color of the AB165 layout. I will try swapping the leads and see if that helps. My comments are based on assuming that you've configured your ENTIRE output stage, fr...

Since we haven't seen pictures of what you did, I'll just share some comments about YOUR comments about using the AA864 NFB. To follow up on xtian's post: As someone who has done the hybrid AA864/AB165 conversion on two AB165 circuits, and converted a Pro Reverb to a "Bassman Combo" using the same h...

Tube rectifier differences

This is a follow-up to my previous post asking advice about using a 5Y3 rectifier tube in my 5E3 build, versus a 5AR4. I got good suggestions about that, for which I thank everyone. I appreciate the advice about getting a vintage 5Y3, and probably will eventually, but just to satisfy my own curiosit...
