Re: Manzamp!

After a couple more discussions with Cliff, we have an agreement on its purpose. At that value it's not being used for 'tonal' purposes. It's definitely stability. Because its on the first gain stage, the inductive action of the electrolytic could couple high frequencies in to the cathode which woul...

Re: Manzamp!

The small cap is most likely a poly with a much lower esr, quicker and faster than the elytic. Nothing special, it works. That one. When I said frequency/response I wasn't talking about the audio signal dumping through it but I certainly didn't make that clear, tried to get there with bringing up p...

Re: Manzamp!

The use of the small bypass cap in parallel with the large bypass cap on a cathode isn't new, or novel. Similar to how they're used in hifi circles putting a small value film cap in parallel with the electrolytics in the power supply. Different responses/different frequencies, de-harshing the 'lyti...

Re: Manzamp!

I can't imagine Dumble running first stage regulation with 110uF from a GZ34. ... Alan Phillips Carol-Ann Amps. Thanks for having a look and I appreciate the input. The schematic may need to be updated to 5U4 which is what I am using. I have 'helper' diodes on the 5U4 socket. Thanks for the comment...

Re: Manzamp!

I've not actually worked on one of these amps, but I can't imagine Dumble running first stage regulation with 110uF from a GZ34. That's a pretty fundamental design faux paux. Maximum design limit is 60uF, in practice even less on new prod. rectifiers, I typically don't dare go above 40uF. This is du...

Funny how opinions differ. I thought it was not well put...especially the dickheads part. I guess you didn't think he meant you... :P I can't be good for business to leave a general dickheads floating out there. Look no further than earlier in this thread to witness a fine demonstration of dickhead...

Re: Looks like Quinn is going under

I'm with Alan on this one. Running into problems that are out of your control really can quickly turn into big issues even if you do take care of them the right way. But I'm not sure why any of you animals are having troubles finding cabinets  Volume bro, One of my Dealers buys 30 or 40 ext ca...

The misrepresented delivery dates don't help either, because you pass the information on to customers and you end up having to explain over and ov...

Re: Looks like Quinn is going under

Now let's say you have bought a batch jacks and suddenly you have 30 customers start popping up with the same problem, you have to ship them back, repair and return them or arrange techs to change them if they are far away or abroad. This now becomes a lot of time and expense. That's a real world e...

Re: Bonamassa amp rig with Greg Koch and Brandon Montgomery

The Ballad of John Henry album has his best songs, tones and playing. This was the same time as the RAH DVD. I'm obviously biased because my amps toured with him for 5 years and on all the rigs around this time. THe second solo in Stop of BOJH is an EL34 amp I built that was different to the touring...

Re: Help me troubleshoot. Blowing tubes and fuses

If the ticking is regular, with the same time interval between ticks, it's typically a capacitive effect from HT to ground somewhere. The most common place is actually the HT switch, you can bypass that to eliminate it. Fuseholders, supply caps, tube sockets, even one of the preamp tubes...there's a...

Re: Looks like Quinn is going under

Making a living hand building amps is probably a fantasy many of us have, but the numbers don't add up for me. I'd need $60 an hour and 40 hours a week to just rent a house in Ballard. And that would be without health insurance. I could move somewhere cheaper, but then I would be farther away from ...

Re: Mesa Lonestar Special schematic needed

Any hits on this? I wonder if Mesa would send me one since I own one? Let me know. I could call and try. No problem getting schems from Mesa if you are a legitimate repair business, not so sure about an end user requesting, you can only try. In fact a couple of years ago I was repairing the power a...
