Re: Aspen Pittman

That's a real shame. His book was the first I ever bought on guitar amps. A wealth of knowledge.

Re: 5e7 build - where to use carbon comp resistors?

I just had an original on my bench. The 5E7 originally had a selenium rectifier instead of a silicone diode. The selenium rectifier has a greater breakover voltage, so you may have to adjust your bias resistor. If I was building from scratch, I would just put a bias pot in it and be done.

Re: being sober blows

I'm on this journey as well. Six days in now. Moderation has been difficult for me long term, my consumption seems to creep up over time, then I reset and start the cycle again. I have quit for over a year every decade of my adult life. This time I have a choice, bp meds or sobriety. I'm having a ha...

Re: The shit we worried about in 2006

You guys speak the truth. Half the places I play have mirrors behind and/beside or the band. There is more than one kind of ugly reflection going on.

Re: Non-Traditional 15 watt Liverpool with PCB

I know I am reviving an old thread, but I am in the process of ironing the wrinkles out of one of these. First impression is that this is putting out way more than 15 Watts, but in a great harmonic way. The clean to mean is very nice and it is easy to find the spot on the guitar volume where you can...

Re: Computer power supply noise

Actually my amplifier is on the opposite side of the room. The two computers are stacked one atop the other. One induces noise, the other does not. The entire room is on the same circuit.

Re: AB165 Longhorn Mod and other questions

Agreed Stevem. I have changed the filter caps, cathode bypass caps, bias cap (100uF/100v), upgraded to a three prong power cable, removed the death cap and ripped out all of the previously poorly executed mods. Yesterday my shipment of plate resistors arrived and that pretty much fixed the rest. The...

Computer power supply noise

Sometimes it takes me a while to catch on. I have two computers in my studio, one strictly for music apps and my internet computer that I do everything else with. I had a power supply failure on my internet computer a few months back. Shortly after, I noticed that my Express was starting to hum and ...

AB165 Longhorn Mod and other questions

I picked up an AB165 for a reasonable price last year. I am working through it, still waiting on plate resistors to arrive and power tube sockets (one has a bit of a chunk out of it). It sounds really nice except for some crackling and hum I am tracking down. I have not converted the bias yet. I am ...

Re: I Do NOT want to work today...

I too feel your pain. My job used to be very technical. Now it is 10% technical and the rest is meetings, email and CYA. At least the end is in sight. Being debt free has opened up options for me. I highly recommend it.

Re: New Princeton Reverb build

I have one of the re-issue Jensen goldbacks in my 6G2. I like it a lot. I haven't pulled an original speaker out of my Vibrolux Reverb to compare head to head, but it is definitely in the ball park.

Chicov, check out Electronic Parts Outlet (EPO) on Fondren. They have used scopes there fairly reasonably and occasionally have workshops where they run through Oscope basics.

My brother is a home inspector here in Texas. I believe the training varies from state to state. He loves it, but he is wired a bit different from me. Here are some things to consider: Starting out, the biggest challenge is sales and marketing. My brother cleans up well and was able to work himself ...
