Re: JJ GZ34 Issues ??

I had similar issues maybe 6 or 7 years ago. I had much better luck with the Sovteks and in one instance I switched over to a Weber Copper Cap rectifier and it put out almost exactly the same (5vdc higher) DC. An added plus is it doesn't require the additional 5vac heaters so the PT could run a litt...

Re: Classic Tone/Magnetic Components Closing?

LAAAAAAAAME. I love those transformers. Have half a dozen of them or so in my builds. Great pieces. That sucks. Totally sucks.

Re: Suggestions for specific Low-End tweak I'm looking for

no, the v1b cathode resistor is 820R, not 2k7. That's incorrect in a 1959 like Ed's. It was a split cathode Super Lead where V1a is the Bass channel with the 820r/320uf/.022uF arrangement, while V1b is the Lead channel with the 2.7k/.68uF/.0022uF arrangement. No, the 2k7 was introduced much later. ...

Re: Suggestions for specific Low-End tweak I'm looking for

The EVH Marshall has a couple of things that will add bass. One is a giant 220uf cap across the EQ's cathode 820ohm (or 1k) resistor but you can experiment with that value. .... Ed only used the lead channel and it was stock with the typical 2.7k/.68uf/.0022uF deal. Adding bass by increasing the ca...

The EVH Marshall has a couple of things that will add bass. One is a giant 220uf cap across the EQ's cathode 820ohm (or 1k) resistor but you can experiment with that value. .68 is pretty spicy in the high end but it certainly has a cool sound with humbuckers. I like 1uf there too, 4.7uf and 10uf are...

Re: Suggestions for specific Low-End tweak I'm looking for

First, I would try reducing the two 0.1uF coupling caps in the output of the phase inverter to something smaller like .022uF if they aren't already The difference is a reduction in frequencies below 10hz which are entirely unneeded in a guitar amp as far as I am concerned. If you like the bass compr...

Re: 8 or 16 Ohm Tranny Tap?

Nice article, but it does not discuss much about output transformers. ...I can't imagine it having a significant effect on the sound. I shared that article because it is also a part of Stevie's "series" of articles about speakers which has some interesting information about speaker impedance and fr...

Re: 8 or 16 Ohm Tranny Tap?

https://www.premierguitar.com/articles/24917-speaker-geeks-why-graphs-matter-and-when-they-dont This article by the inimitable Steve Fryette explains some of the behavior that occurs with different speaker taps. Personally, I like 16 ohms for pretty much everything. 8ohms is fine. 4ohms is really no...

Re: #124 sprague atom TVA 1628 replacement.

Another vote for F and Ts. They are the best caps you can get these days and their cap cans are also the best. They aren't too bad price-wise and I have had better results with them than the newer (last 15 years) Spragues.

Re: Freeway switches for Strats

That is certainly quite odd, you wouldn’t think that a switch would have any effect on the tone of the pickups. It was very confusing at the time but reflecting back, it may have been the particular wiring I was using and how the circuit itself for those particular pickup selections was making the ...

Re: Freeway switches for Strats

I'm curious about this switch and how it actually SOUNDS with certain pickups and guitars. A big issue I have with all these fancy switches is that they seem to alter the way the pickups sound in a way that is significantly different than their more simple counterparts. I had a 4 way (as well as 5 w...

Re: My take on an SSS

Hey y'all, I was trying to figure this out without resurrecting this old thread but I think I have reached the pinnacle of my own confusion. The issue is the Local Negative Feedback Loops being somewhat different from the layout compared to the schematic. Here's a break down of the schematic: V1 (EQ...

Re: Dr. Zed Remedy tone loss when guitar is rolled off

Ah, I see. Given that info, probably the biggest issue I can see is the loop. If it is simply a passive loop coming off the 470/470-470pf mixer resistor network, it's going to be high impedance and low current, so the longer the cable from the "Send" of the loop, the more high end loss will occur. I...

Re: Dr. Zed Remedy tone loss when guitar is rolled off

How long is the cable you are using and what type of cable is it? That might be playing a role in the high frequency roll off. Additionally the coupling caps on those first two gain stages look kind of odd to me for their respective channels but it's kind of hard to tell from the photos. It appears ...

Re: DC voltage on input jacks on 5f2a and Tweedle dee

Well pulled V1 and fired it up. I guess it’s not the tube and is the board. Do I just unsolder the existing grid stoppers and mount them to the jacks as above. Can I use just regular wire or should I get some shielded wire to run from the jacks to pin 2? Unfortunately, I have a feeling from reading...
