Re: Drawing Schematics

Right, I was looking at upper right. Still (and sorry to derail the thread), I just don't think the voltage is just going to magically jump over to ground. Or are you mentioning it because it's one of those crappy fiber boards? Now that actually seems more reasonable.

Re: Drawing Schematics

I dont know about recognition but it gives me the hebee-geebees to see B+ so close to grounded hardware..... In particular both B+ wires from the PT feeding the diodes on the rt side of the board, seems awfully close to the mounting screws. That screen resistor is a little bothersome floati...

Re: How do you "burn-in" your builds?

Well, it depends on what you mean by burn-in. It you mean the one you do to stabilize bias and voltages and so on, just switch it on and let it run for few hours. If you mean the burn-in process for sound evolution, I do nothing. Just playing. Yes, that's what I mean. I mentioned I did not mean for...

Re: How do you "burn-in" your builds?

Thanks. Everyone's suggestions/experiences all sounds reasonable to me too, and I think a couple hours with full range music or pink noise should do the trick. I also agree that if you think your amps are possible fire hazard, maybe you should rethink your construction techniques :) But you know, sh...

Re: How do you "burn-in" your builds?

Well I think that may be a bit geeky for most guitarists. This is the technical section of an amp building forum, right? Seriously, plug in, play, turn knobs, turn the volume up loud, down soft. If you are going to put hours on an amp, you might as well be playing. Tubes have a finite lifespan. I t...

How do you "burn-in" your builds?

I've never done this myself, but I always hear stuff like: 'Burned-in under full load for 24 hours." WTF is "full load?" Do they mean actually mean with full current draw, or just at max clean power? I think running a 100W Plexi at full power for 24 hours would just eat the tubes. Most guitar amps a...

Re: Noisy Power Transformer 120hz buzz

No, you did what you were supposed to. You're lucky you did not snap those long thin bolts which do not take kindly to a lot of torque (learned the hard way of course). Honestly everyone recommends that and it works 1% of the time. 99% of the time the transformer is a just a lemon. I've already tigh...

Re: What's this resistor do?

Thanks! That makes sense now that I look at it, and realize this one is AC coupled.

I wanna do this PI, but use an additional voltage divider/filter node to set the bias, rather than using a tube. Will that affect the input impedance at all? Can I leave the 100K as is?

Re: Mod for marshall 50W 1986 Bass

Yeah, all this mods put the gain pot after the 2nd stage, and in "hairy brown eye" mode, the gain pot is after the 3rd stage! You have a less control of the gain that way, but the tone is consistent....ly butt rock.

Re: Mod for marshall 50W 1986 Bass

There's a Small Box discussion and schematic at the SLOclone forums. But, I'll save you the trouble... it's the bright channel of a Jose mod with a few snubbers to make it less fizzy.

Re: Triode USA?

From another dealer point of view... They might not have stock and are waiting for there delivery a Reply email would have been nice. Yeah, they are almost as quick as Steve to ship when they have it in stock. Ironically, they are in the same city as Magnetic Components, so you'd think it wouldn't ...

Re: Quick Question on screen resistors

Phil, I've never heard of that before--but I totally dig what you're saying about shielded wires being thought of like an extension of the chassis. Cool perspective to keep in mind (especially in those cases where the two schools of thought are inclined to overlap). I first heard it described in th...

Re: High Gain Orange Amps

Yeah, cathodyne is either AC or DC coupled, both just sound different. Many prefer the DC, or was that AC?.... I think you'll have to try both yourself and see! Cleans are not too different but DC will have less crustiness and more puncy...ness. Presence cap is .47uF as far as I know. One thing to t...
