Re: Op Amp Guru's?
Dang you already ordered those crappy 5532's huh? They're decent op amps but for a few bucks you can dramatically improve the performance with a higher quality Burr-Brown part. I'd have to study the schematic a bit to find an appropriate replacement (or Google around, I'm sure others have done so) b...

Re: Aluminum vs Steel chassis
If you are relying on a steel chassis to carry large return currents and there is flux being leaked into that same area then yes you will be inducing hum from the power transformer. If you carefully control your high current return paths (so that resistivity in these lines is very low and voltage is...

Where to sell Trainwreck clones?
So Ebay won't let me sell these right? Can I post them under a pseudo-name (ChooChooCrash Missile)? I read somewhere that Fender is now chasing down people who use their name/product names without permission.. Can I sell on Reverb.com without any issues?
Where do you guys sell your clones?

Re: just scored some broken stuff, need help.
If any of that broken stuff has any miniature circuitry in them besides what is likely blown output stages you might as well toss it out, as you'll not fix it! If they have switching type power supply's you do not even have any SS type power transformers to harvest! I disagree completely. If the OP...

Re: just scored some broken stuff, need help.
Post pics and symptoms. I buy broken equipment and fix it often, it's actually been a decent moneymaker lately. We can probably help you work through the issues. Power amps are usually pretty easy to fix if you have the right tools.

Re: MOSFET Vbe multiplier ???
I use high power FET's to do these pretty often. I have a large stash of high power TO-3 FET's laying around so they're what I use. As JM mentioned the threshold voltage is much larger than that of a BJT so you're dealing with a few volts less that you can reduce the B+ by. However this is easily ov...

Re: Non-Polar Capacitors
Cost, size and for ESR reasons. The cost goes up, the size goes up and the ESR doubles. Not good for switching/linear supplies but alright for what you're doing.martin manning wrote:Yes and yes.rp wrote:So why aren't all e-caps non-polar? Cost?
BTW are those big value/high volatge caps like Solens non-polar?

Re: How did you get your start in amp repairs?
My grandpa worked for Lockheed for many years. He was a bona fide spy during WWII and afterward, focusing, I think, on communications. Could never talk much about work. But his house, where I was babysat a lot, was FILLED with electronics. He taught me to read schematics, solder, program, shoot, an...

Re: Traynor YBA-1 But Which One?
I've had to re-engineer one or two Traynor's. They were kind of a mess when I got them although I don't remember what was from the guy I was fixing it for or from the factory (both did some naughty things that had to be removed/reworked). After a bit of cleanup and circuit tweaking though that amp w...

Re: 807 Beer Beam Power Tube
I like the 807 a lot. My dad is a ham so we keep a healthy supply of old American 807's and 1625's around. Not sure where the stuff about American ones sounding bad is coming from. They are literally 6L6's with a plate cap. The 6GB6 is the same deal, 6L6 structure with a plate cap. They all sound ju...

Re: Camera/Photography
These days you ought to be able to buy a used Nikon or Cannon simple SLR with some auto features on eBait for a reasonable price, doncha think? I mean, she isn't looking for a Leica, is she? The actual camera is the least of the worries. I am in process of looking for a Canon A-1. But I will need a...
