Re: Cap Leakage Tester Schematic

Haven't been around here in a long time. You can build a direct reading one from the schematic in Alan Douglas' Tube testers and Classic Test Equipment which I did. Or what's easier is to get yourself an insulation tester like the HVAC boys and girls use, they've got a little power supply that can p...

Re: Eyett fiberboard vs turret boards - BYO vs. Weber

You got me thinking so I went down to the laboratory and got a piece of Mojotone vulcanized fiberboard about 24 inches long and hooked up my insulation tester. It was not able to measure resistance because it was far above 2000 megohms. That's close enough to infinite for me, until I finish building...

Re: Eyett fiberboard vs turret boards - BYO vs. Weber

In The Soul of Tone the process of waxing the boards-ever so California, right?-is done by immersing the boards in a vessel with molten wax and then pulling a vacuum that pulls all the air out of the boards, which is then replaced by wax.

Sooner or later "Murder will out, as we see day by day." Information can rarely be kept secret forever, especially in this day and age of the internet. Call it the Snowden effect: If at all interesting, information will find its way to the maximum number of users in an impossibly short time, no matt...

Re: Eyett fiberboard vs turret boards - BYO vs. Weber

I too have heard the stories about conductive vulcanized fiberboard eyelet boards but have never run across one yet. That includes a 1953 Fender Super that lived in a basement for a long time. I'm sure my day is coming though. I like eyelet boards myself because they're very easy to fabricate and as...

Re: Advantages of PTP wiring?

One thing that may have been touched on here is the genius behind Leo Fender's eyelet board construction. I didn't tumble to this until I started building amps with boards I made myself. Once you've got a board built and tested with its flying leads attached, the process of installing it and wiring ...

Re: 5B3 deluxe refurb- advice needed

On a lot of Fender schematics it tells you that voltage can be as much as +/- 20 per cent from the schematic. Nothing to worry about.

Re: HP 200CD oscillator restoration

I would head on over to the antique radio forums for test equipment and see what you can learn there. The bulbs are part of the bridge circuit. You can see them on figure 4.1 of the manual.

That's about one of the best pieces of test equipment there is. by the way.

Re: Need advice on Twin that took a dive.

If the stuff is sticky, then it's the wax that the transformer was potted with. If it is not sticky, it's lacquer that was used for potting, nothing to worry about. In either case run it until it burns out. That may be tomorrow, it may be never. I've found a number of transformers that had leaked so...

Re: 2013 12AX7 Tube Comparison

The most important thing to me as a semi pro amp mechanic is to buy preamp tubes that are low noise, particularly when I'm working on a high gain amp. My customers want stuff in their amps that works right out of the box and that they don't have to fiddle with. I scored a bunch of Phillips 6681 mobi...

Re: Must find replacement power transformer!

Doubtful. What sort of real estate does it occupy?

I note that one side of the HV winding and the 6.3v winding are marked 0. Does that mean that leg is grounded?
