Re: 1U power amp 2×20w- any ideas for a build?

If you want to go 12- 20 watt per side clean headroom with Single ended you will need to use larger power tubes like 6L6GC and at least 2 in parallel per side to get closer to 20 watts. I just finished experimenting with a single ended 6L6 D Style 124 build. Single ended sounds great! You just need...

1U power amp 2×20w- any ideas for a build?

Having resurrected my #183 Dumble 1U preamp, I've been looking for a 1U tube power amp but the usual suspects Marshall or Mesa 20 20 are now quite old and still expensive. SS options are Palmer Macht and Matrix but I'm not sure I'll like the sound. Using a toroidal in a 1U rack case, I wonder what t...

Re: Quick and dirty Mega Boost?

Hi Having got my #183 preamp running well thanks to some invaluable help here, I'm going to lend it to a friend who is an amazing rock blues player. He likes lots of gain so I thought I'd try and convert the PAB to Mega so he doesn't reach for the pedal board. It's likely he'll play the preamp thro...

I went from that build, tweaking and modding on the way straight to 50w HRM Dumble style :D
Actually think mine was an older model called SE5-A

Re: Single ended EL34 amp design

You had me at "sounds great"! I'm here in the Czech Republic - an expat. as English as fish and chips. No reason to think they have struggled with Brexit though, the European shipping rates look okay. As far as the going rates go, they are one of the more reasonably priced suppliers. MM - fuggedabo...

Re: Single ended EL34 amp design

20230428_161744.jpg20230428_175424.jpg What's your experience there? I heard about them through Merlin's website. They look good on paper at least! Excellent to deal with, helpful and good value transformers. I got the multi tap PT as well for the 3 levels of B+. EL34 SE is loud at the full B+, but...

Re: Single ended EL34 amp design

20230428_161744.jpg 20230428_175424.jpg This OPT https://primarywindings.com/product/5000-ohms-20w-single-ended-output-transformer/ has 100mA DC current at the primary - any good? Quiescent Ia = 63mA and the theoretical peak - point (A) on the chart is 133mA. I would expect some heat to be generate...

Re: Single ended EL34 amp design

You are probably right, I like this transformer because it looks well built and has a good bandwidth compared to similar Hammond transformers for example. I'm not even sure I will stay with this though, there are possibilities for extra gain using different primary impedances. What do you think of ...

Re: Quick and dirty Mega Boost?

Well after trying every which way to Sunday to increase the PAB level, I must report with some shame that I had wired up the relay incorrectly. I noticed that I had very little tone control so with layout in hand, I checked from bass pot right through to Volume pot. I found I had mistakenly wired di...

Re: Quick and dirty Mega Boost?

Hi and thanks for the response. I have the trimmer on the rear panel and yes I can dial up lots of gain with that. Trouble is it can get a little fizzy too. I'm really after goosing up the PAB so on Clean it will be more Mega too. Also that way in OD you can reduce the OD trim a little and minimise...

Re: Quick and dirty Mega Boost?

The reason for a Bluesmaster having a Megaboost is because the tonestack is dumping a lot of signal to ground. The difference in signal between, straight from Tonestack and PAB is Mega. (Some call it over the top). The Skyliner tonestack is different from the Bluesmaster and doesn't dump as much si...

Re: Quick and dirty Mega Boost?

I did try this suggestion by dimitris but I couldn't get it to work, maybe because my relay is not wired like BM. "Edit:just saw that mojotom has already suggested the same thing) You can try the bluesmaster pab padded with a resistor,i find it usefull especially with a strat and it will not alter y...
