Re: Considering an Express-based vintage PA conversion...Is it worth the hassle?

Go for it. I've built a couple non-traditional Express amps. Follow good lead dress, and you'll minimize possible oscillations. You may have to add some grid stops if there's trouble. I felt the need to dump a bunch of gain in the early stages, because, DAMN there's a lot of gain. And then, plan to ...

Re: Extension Speaker Cab question

Balancing the load will get you the most power output. So, two 8 ohm speaker cabs wired in parallel makes a 4 ohm load, and you should set the selector to 4 ohms. Sure, you can run a mismatch if it sounds better to you. You'll get a bit lower output, possibly earlier distortion (but only if you're p...

There's no technical need or benefit in doing so.
Just switch the amp power on or off, as required.
Pete, I think we need some merch. T-shirts and bumper stickers that say, "NO-STANDBY CLUB" or some such.

Re: Series fuses and other oddities

The Fender Bassman RI (tweed 4x10) has a 3A fuse (accessible outside chassis) followed by a 4A fuse in series, inside the chassis. Strangely, the 4A fuse had gone open when the client brought it in.

So, the input to this module is 120vAC wall voltage? And rectified output is 350vDC?

Re: cabinet build - leaving space on each side of the chassis

Width of cutout for chassis should be 0.25" wider than chassis for a snug fit, or +0.3125" for some breathing room.

Re: Bad power?

Just because an outside power line runs close does not suggest noise or poor AC from utility. A scope would be userful for examining the AC.

To answer second question, Spark amps from positivegrid.com are pretty cool practice amps.

Re: Light bulb limiter tured bright at power on

Sounds correct. Typically, the bulb will get bright right at power up, as the reservoir filter fills, then it should fade.
