Re: Why so little Gibson amps clones ?
PS Why don't TAG members copy/backward engineer Standel amps. Joe Maphis Merle Travis, Speedy West, Chet Atkins, Hank Thompson, Grady Martin, Hank Garland, Larry Collins, Ralph Mooney, Noel Boggs, Buddie Emmons, and Wes Montgomery (Solid State) played Standel amps and many more of the top session m...

Re: EL84/6V6 5E3 Power amp question
Using a 6v6 and el84 in a push pull arrangement flies in the face of conventional tube amp building. But that doesn't mean it's a bad idea. I have built "The Standard" amplifier from Kevin O'Connor's "The Ultimate Tone" series. I love it. Currently I am running 2 el34's against 2 6l6wgb's. I love th...

Re: Storing Components in an Organized Way?
This is something I ran across some time ago, I believe it is shear genius.
I want to build one myself when I get a house with a basement.

Re: Looking for suggestions for a low noise (hiss) practice amp
I'm sure I have far less experience/knowledge than most here, but from my studies, to remove the noise depends much more on layout, spacing, and grounding methods than the actual circuit used.

Re: Bulletproofing an amp?
If you check that PDF really careful, it seems that the Mains fuse for 230V is not 6A, but T 1.6AE, and T3AE for the 110/120V.

Re: how to undestand Power transformer specs
OK, Not trying to contradict anyone, but thankful for the thread and replies, it helps me to try to get a grasp of this too. But, doesn't the OT primary impedance play into this? I was under the impression that it did, that the current draw would be different between say, a pair of 6L6's with a 4K p...

Re: Let's talk resistors!
Hello, I usually don't have much to add, but like to read everyone's posts. But I've read Keen's article mentioned earlier, and it brings some things to mind. It is my understanding that it is undisputed that CC's degrade and drift and get noisier with time, MF's not so much. The debate is whether C...

Re: Noob Question about a pilot lamp
Hello,
At last! A question I can help with. ( I think).
Yes the pilot lamp will only use what it needs. The 3A rating on the power transformer is for how much current it can produce safely. So, you are ok loading it UP TO 3A. Even with that there is usually a little wiggle room.

Yeah, feeling your pain!
Bought a pair of the Tung Sol EL34B's for about $28 for the pair, now they are twice that! I really liked them and was planning to buy another pair, but not when they are that high.

Re: Bluesharp questions
I had a friend who played harp. Bought a 59 Bassman RI and didn't like it because it didn't break up like he wanted it to. But everyone's different, so I would ask your friend if he wants it to distort or be clean. I might suggest the 5E3 circuit, it can get pretty loud, built to stock it breaks up ...

4ohms... Much more clean headroom..
16ohm ..much earlier break up ...
My 2 cents...
More than likely the transformer is wired for 4 ohms then.

Re: Does speaker impedance affect tone?
Just an addition. If you go from 4 ohm parallel load to series with the same speakers, that means you are then making the load 16 ohms. If the transformer is wired for a 4 ohm load that's quite a mismatch, and will change the tone considerably. Also if the speakers are rewired to be series from para...
