Re: I saw this on the Z Wreck

I'm sure I'm going to miss 6PSs, bummer, they were nice to have. The day is nigh when us tube amp bums will be forced to go all boutique for parts - or just stop giving a crap and just use whatever's at hand. Bet now that they are extinct they become a cult wonder cap  Check out the CDE DMT se...

Re: high gain lee jackson gp 1000

Hope I'm not pissing on the op's thread or any forum rules for that matter but I have one of these gp-1000's circa 88' sitting in the closet. I'm sure I could be persuaded to part with it if anyone is interested. No mas thread hijack, shoot me a pm

Re: What speakers sound good with the express?

I really like the Heritage g12h 55hz in a straight 4x12 with my express build. Weber 30w silver bell ceramics are great too. I had the opportunity to a/b the heritage vs some real pulsonics that were also 30w 55hz and I preferred the reissue for my wreck. The old ones were def sweeter and I'd take e...

Re: snap in caps

I was thinking about getting some of these http://ca.mouser.com/Search/m_ProductDetail.aspx?EPCOS%2fB43501A9337M%2f&qs=sGAEpiMZZMtZ1n0r9vR22d%252bAjwidwn01J8vXxj%252b8nfU%3d What do you guys think? Just built an amp that used some Panasonic snap in's for the mains filter and it turned out killer! I...

Re: snap in caps

Anyone tried Miec axials? Very compact, high quality and inexpensive. I've used them in several builds, and they are every bit as good, if not better than Sprague Atoms or F&T. I got mine from www.justradios.com/axialelectrolytics.html I've used the 600v axials in a couple amps, small sampling but ...

Re: Whats your favorite type of pot

Only problem I've experienced with pec's is that they absolutley do not like repeated soldering and desoldering on the lugs. I only use them when I'm building a proven design that I'm gonna do once and do right. Too expensive to throw to the dogs of a science project anyway but they're great pots in...

I'm a sucker for the classics in this regard. Rear loaded with familiar dimensions just sounds right.

Re: Is the real Trainwreck amp sound much better than clones?

Building amps to me is a lot like cooking. You can give 10 people the same recipe and each resulting dish will have some of the individual personality of the guy or gal that went through the process to make it. Ken was a damned good cook for sure, he knew what he wanted to hear or "taste" and he had...

Re: I think G12H's sound the best for the Express.

I agree! I recently scored a quad of heritage g12h 55hz and contrary to the very mixed reviews I read prior with some saying they are too bright or too harsh I find them to be perfect for my express (not built by Ken but by me with a few small liberties taken). Yes they are more aggressive than puls...

Re: Gibson Historic potentiometer....

Just received four 500K Historic pots from Musicians Friend. They measure 552k, 542K, 540K and 532K. Pretty good! Had about the same luck last time I picked some up from CE. Worst I've had in my sampling of about 20 or so was a few that were in the 450k range. I kinda like those for bridge position...

Re: Marshall owners needed - Early PCB based models

Looks like I'm late to the party but I've got a PCB from a '75 Super Lead that you can have if you need any additional info. Some jerk modded the piss out of it in the past to where it's not really worth fixing at this point but it's all there as a go by. It's yours if you need it.

Hey Garlin......

Just wondering man.....How many amps have you built from scratch? You certainly strike me as the type of guy that has modded an amp or two of his own, likely with info aped from a site like this one, got lucky enough for it to sound pretty good and so now you really know what's up. You're gonna tell...

Re: TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik EL-34

Spoke with Telefunken this morning and they have EL34's available. Guy i spoke with say's they have about 100 tubes left. Bad news is they are $800.00 for a matched quad! http://www.telefunken-elektroakustik.com/products/el-34.php :( As a self confessed tube nerd I've gotta say the el34 pictured in...

Re: Tantalum caps for cathode bypass

I've been looking for a good source for some ~5uF bypass caps to use on an amp build and find that the supply of lower voltage electrolytic bypass caps is not too good. Is there any reason not to use Tantalum caps for the cathode bypass on preamp tubes? Hey RJ, I've got some old stock 4.7uf's kicki...

Re: Fixed and cathode bias at the same time

I repaired a Divided by 13 FTR 37 a while back that had this kind of bias set up. It was a pretty cool amp but it didn't really knock my socks off. I wouldn't pin that all on the bias circuit though.
