Re: 15H choke for 2x6L6 blackface-type amp?

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll pass that choke and get a new one better suitable for this project.

Re: 15H choke for 2x6L6 blackface-type amp?

Bear in mind that inductance may change with current (ac and dc), and collapse when the saturation current is exceeded. Have you tried measuring the inductance of chokes whose spec you know? Hi! I measured few chokes of different Henry-scale (uH - H) whose specs I know and it most likely looks like...

15H choke for 2x6L6 blackface-type amp?

Hi. I'm in the process of building a 2x6L6 "Blackface"-style amp and I have an old recycled choke on hand that I plan to use. I loaned a LCR-meter from my friend to check the inductance and it reads about 15 Henrys and dcr is 159 ohms. That's about 4-5 times more inductance that Fender used. How wil...

Re: Outer foil direction - EQ and pre PI coupling cap

I’ve never checked the orientation of the film caps before, but will definately do it with my coming Marshall build. Found and watched a very thorough video about it and now I kind of feel stupid that I haven’t paid attention to this subject before although I’ve known it matters😅 From now on I’ll be...

Re: Philips MKT capacitors?

And I have a head cab waiting also.
This was some old telephone equipment box but it just looks that there has to be an amp in it!

Re: Philips MKT capacitors?

Thanks for the replies! I think I’ll use them for most parts of the signal chain. I was going trough my stashes last weekend and selected most of the components to make a layout. Found two of those ”no-name” 22nf/1kV KT-capacitors so those will go after P.I. ERO mkt1813 680nf caps I have for cathode...

Re: Philips MKT capacitors?

The B+ will be in the 400V ballpark. So in the preamp plates and CF stage cathode there will be maximum like 250-300V. I think I try and see how it sounds and what happens.

Philips MKT capacitors?

Hi! Marshall-fever hit me big time a while ago and I see no other cure for it than build me one. I have plenty of these 22nf Philips MKT caps and I was thinking about using them🤔 It’s gonna be late JMP 2204/early JCM800 —type circuit and what I’ve read that those yellow box caps were MKT-type and ma...

Wire wound power resistor wattage?

Hi. I have few of these vintage wire wound resistors, but there is no info about the wattage rating stamped on them. Is there any other way to determine the possible wattage than just the size. These measure 5 cm / (about 2 inhces) in length. They could probably be somewhere in the 5-10W region? The...

Re: Lowering bias range

That would do the trick. Tailor the resistor value to fit your target voltage. And yes it will narrow the effective range of the pot also a bit.

Vintage waxed mica cap voltage rating?

Hi. Does anyone have experience with this kind of vintage waxed mica caps? I would like to use it in my next build. The voltage on the capacitor will be around 150V. I have few of those caps, sourced from an old tube radio many years ago so that would kind of indicate it should be ok, but there are ...

EF184 as pre amp tube? Mojave anyone?

Hi. I have a bunch of EF184 tubes and I would like to get them into action. I have built amps with EF86 and 5879 pentodes and it would be nice to try these. I found only one guitar amp schematic, the moonlight amp that uses EF184 front end and those values would probably be a good starting point. Mo...

Re: Gibson GA40T Les Paul Schematics

There is two different schematics for GA-40 Les Paul amp. Earlier models 54' - 56' had 6sj7 preamp tubes and 6sn7 p.i. and from 56' (iirc) they used 5879 preamp tubes and 12ax7 p.i. Pair of 6V6's cathode biased in the power section. Both of them has tremolo. Never have heard one of the earlier ones,...
