Re: Cheap amps as a build platform

Thanks for all the replies. Well as it happened my partner brought home an old solid state amp she got for free yesterday. Haha. It actually sounds better than I expected haha. Not sure whether it'll be worth doing but I'm sure I could do something with it for fun. IMG_5847.jpeg IMG_5848.jpeg IMG_58...

Cheap amps as a build platform

Anyone here use cheaper amps as a start for a build? Using the cab, chassis, etc and building something different inside. What are the drawbacks? Any recommended amps to look out for that people tend to get rid of?

Seen a few that look cool on marketplace and could be an interesting project...

Build done. No sound. What next?

Ok so I've just finished building a plexi style circuit.powers up. Light works. Tubes light up nicely. Getting no sound at all. What is the next step to troubleshoot? It's there a logic progression to work through the circuit? Any ideas? Tried a few things but I'm feeling a bit lost at the moment. I...

Cap polarity

Just wondering the polarity of these caps. Seems the wrap indicates a different direction than the shape of the cap. Is this correct? Sorry for the noob question but seemed odd to me and I wanted to be sure.

Thanks for any help.

Hiwatt preamp

I have a dr504 clone that I built for guitar and it sounds amazing for bass. However it is greatly underpowered. I have a reeves 225 but I yearn for the dr504 tone. I was wondering what do I need to do to the original dr504 to build the preamp as a stand alone unit? Will it still retain that tone or...

Re: Dr504 build el34 flutter

With tubes in the voltages are pretty much the same. Plate 517 Screen 550 Grid 40 The fuses haven't blown. http://www.ceriatone.com/images/layoutPic/HeyWhat/HeyWhat504.jpg That's the layout I used. It is wired up exactly to that. I have checked that it's right. I will go triple check that it's right...

Re: Dr504 build el34 flutter

Ok so voltages are Plate 517 Screen 552 & 562 Grid 38 & 39 This is without power tubes installed. Now I put the tubes back in and ere was still the whirring noise but no flutter (I swapped the tubes around to see if it would follow the one that fluttered. Now my big mistake (dumbass) After a few che...

Dr504 build el34 flutter

Hey guys I just finished putting together a ceriatone dr504 build. I was testing section by section and when I finally but the power tubes in and turned it on there was a mechanical whirring noise and then a flutter of light in one of the el34s. I had the bias pot right at the minimum if that makes ...

Re: Ceriatone Big Deluxe?

Hey just popping in to mention I have built a 5x3 recently. I used kt66 tubes instead of 6l6s it sounds great. It was my first build and I had a small problem with hum. If you go this path you may need to change the grounding scheme from the layout ceriatone provides. I had to ground the first 2 cap...

Re: series resistors parallel caps

Hey I am not sure where I read it as I have been going through so many sites to really learn more before I go about my next build. I think it was someones blog somewhere? I would figure it would be a subtle difference if any and probably a higher cost too but again just trying to get as much info an...

series resistors parallel caps

hey guys i read somewhere that in place of a single resistor you put 2 of half the value (making it the same amount of resistance) in series it can make the tone a little more open. Also wondering if doing something similar with 2 half value caps in parallel in place of a single cap would make a dif...

Re: Amp prototyping

Hey guys thanks for the info! some great ideas there and exactly what i was looking for. I was never looking to use a standard breadboard like on the beavis. (i dont want to die haha) just liked the concept of nondestructive building and testing. I realize it is still a lot of work but putting somet...

Amp prototyping

Hey Guys, I just recently finished my first build and I have the bug. Now I am looking at not only building another but building something I can learn from. My idea is to build something similar to a beavis board http://www.beavisaudio.com/bboard/ for amp design rather than pedals. I was thinking a ...
