Re: Output Transformer Resistance
Thanks for the prompt reply Martin! Normally you'd expect ~10% difference. Agreed! I am used to seeing the ~10% difference which is why I though the first transformer was toast. Usually when I measure from center to each plate lead everything is as it should be so I must say I feel a little embarras...

Output Transformer Resistance
Hey everyone, I had a quick question about the primary resistance of the output transformer in the build I am working on. I was getting really low, distorted output in this amp, which is an original build, so I measured from the center tap to one of the plate leads and got a reading of about 90 ohms...

Re: Anyone use teflon wire
Hi Guys,
"John's Silver Teflon Wire Shop" on eBay has used Teledyne Stripall's for $85 + shipping. Don't know what they cost new but thought I would pass it along.
Kevin
edit: just looked them up and they cost $283, so that seems like a pretty good deal.

Re: OD trim voltage value
Hi Guys, I believe the 5C3 and 5D3 use a see saw phase inverter, relating to jelle's comment, and the 5E3 uses the cathodyne (concertina) relating to Tony's. Both produce asymmetrical clipping but in the case of the see saw, it has the distortion of an extra triode on one of the drive lines. Each ha...

Re: Redplate amps. Amazing tone
Does the amp have a built in Dumbelator/ equivalent or is the preamp running directly into the pedal?Only true in a loop - the H.G sucks (French for "blows") in front of an amp

Re: 6L6 D'lite power?
It's not an impedance mismatch, but the size of the OT that limits the output. It is ultimately the OT impedance that will limit the output power. When you mismatch the impedances you are usually doing it to reflect a lower impedance to the tubes which is why you get more output power if you put in...

Re: Texture Knob
Peavey's "Texture" knob is similar to Kevin O'Connors "Body" control. It dials out one of the output tubes in a push-pull pair, allowing a single ended tone due to predominantly even-order distortion. If there is just one tube conducting during the audio cycle and one tube contributing to the audio ...

Re: The Vishay Dale itty bitty 1 watt metal film surprise.
Apologies for the misinterpretation. Perhaps my attitude meter needs calibrating :D. I thought that clarifying the exact type of resistor in this thread was helpful, not playing the "name that resistor game". I appreciate you giving us the heads up and I think the additional information from FYL mak...

What's with the attitude? I thought that was a fair clarification by FYL. Perhaps you forgot the little smiley face at the end?So I used the word Dale............sue me

Re: Ground Lift/Phase switch?
Hi Guys, I have worked with a lot of pro studio gear and a ground lift switch should lift the circuit ground (this connection should remain grounded at RF). The safety ground should NEVER be lifted or disconnected. In order to do this you have to lay out your grounding very carefully and only have o...

Re: Drilling FR4/G10 Garolite
Hi Guys, If you are really into it try these: http://www.precisebits.com/products/carbidebits/drills.asp?tsPT=wire They are solid carbide and designed for CNC drilling of PCB substrates, but there is no reason why they won't work in your drill press. At $2.76 for a #42 (3/32") bit it's not a bad dea...

Re: SSS at the Grammy concert
I believe the sound man has a great deal to do with the discrepancy in tone of this clip. Mayer is way hotter in the mix. It's hard to tell what they would have sounded like if we were there on stage. My two cents.
