Re: 28 watts from a pair of el84's. Is this even possible?
This is not really so different than what Music Man did with their amps. They used a voltage doubling PS and ran the plates around 700vdc and the screens at 350vdc to get ~100 watts out of 2 - 6l6GC. It would appear that Modjeski did something similar with EL84s http://www.ramlabs-musicreference.com...

All wired and ready to make the smoke. Now for the Staring and Fretting stage where I procrastinate before applying power.

Not recent but it there is nothing like the satisfying crunch and pop of vacuum tubes underfoot.

You are giving me too much credit. And if the Flying Spaghetti Monster had intended for us worry about foil orentation he would have marked the foil end of the Orange drop with his noodly appendage.

I'm mainly just whining. But I will be back when I fire the amp up and it makes no sound.

Thanks. I have actually done this before, both with your relay boards and scratch built. But is still makes my head hurt.Colossal wrote:It's easier than it looks. Re: PSA: Cheep Heyboer iron on eBay
the 337-0-337 PT has 3.5 secondaries with only 3A. It says its 40 Watts and good for EL34. Isn't the 3A a little light for EL34s? Hmm - either ordering error from MFG that wasn't caught or typo in the listing. A 5A 5V filament secondary is fairly useless. I anticipate typo but an error could explai...

Re: Tweed Bluezmeister build
I'm excited! Merlin heaters (yay), looks like black Garolite (my preference). Tidy. I didn't count the inversions but sometimes the cleanest looking amps have problems with phase proximity. Not a criticism at all, but I've built beautiful amps that oscillated. Fender, too. Full speed ahead! It's ea...

Re: Tweed Bluezmeister build
More progress. This is going in a small combo cabinet hence the OT placement. I figure if Replate can run their OT wires on top so can I. After I finish the main board I will wire the front panel. The relays will just barely fit between the pots and main board so I hope I don't have to tweak much af...

Re: low-profile 1/4" plugs
How bout these? Old school pancake plugs http://www.amazon.com/GLS-Audio-Profile-Pancake-Speaker/dp/B003UIC78W I've never understood the obsession with solderless plugs that are much less reliable and much more expensive than soldered. The amount of space you save on a board vs pancake plugs is triv...

Re: Reasonably Priced Aluminum Box Sources?
AFAIK Dirty Dawg is not back in business. For a nice heavy aluminum blank chassis Watts Tube Audio would be my pick. .090 aluminum and threaded nuts. They are reasonably priced for what they are. But 1st you may want to check with stretch2011. He has been making chassis for Rockets. Expresses etc. A...

Re: I cannot resist
Living far away isn't any better I have so much stuff I had to add more and more plastic drawer containers to hold it all. Every time I order something I add more to the order just to satisfy myself that paying for the shipping is now worth it with the extra goodies. I'm a very sick man  M...

Re: Merlin's heater wiring scheme.
Looks great. Helpful to see this again. I had been pinching 4+5 together and running 9 along side. This is better. Just need to be careful not to melt insulation on 9 when soldering 4+5. And that's why telfon wire is magical. All traces of hamfisted clumsy soldering technique disappear. If I...
