Re: Robert Cray Band in concert
Oh man, you missed a great show! I drove in from the central valley (down near Modesto) to see it and make a nice long weekend getaway for me and the wife. Next tour you really should try and make it. He's one of those guys that are advancing in age and he's only so many tours left in him. I would d...

Robert Cray Band in concert
Just caught the RCB in Napa over Veteran's Day weekend. Wow what a performer that guy is. He is obviously very well known for his guitar playing but his voice is absolutely just as good as his playing, and at 67 he still can belt it out with the very best of them. He is also a great performer... gre...

Re: Impulse buy (Scumback M75-LD)...
So... a followup... It's now in my main cab. LOVE this speaker. Sounds great with my custom AX84-inspired Simple20 (very Fenderish & my main amp) and sounds REALLY great with my D-style (Trinity OSD kit). I may have him recone an old V30 that has a hole in the cone. Don't really care for V30's anywa...

Re: Garage newbie - amp kit- amp bundle question
I can highly recommend a Trinity 18-Watt kit with VVR for lower-volume use. Awesome kits and lots of variety to choose from in the kit choices.

Re: input tube for this purpose
Also, can someone comment on what you can expect from a cathode biased amp tone/response-wise as compared to grid bias? Here is a great read. The direct answer to your question is about 2/3 of the way down. http://valvewizard.co.uk/pp.html If you are after a clean "hi-fi" sound you will probably wa...

Re: input tube for this purpose
A Princeton-type amp would work great. I would just build a simple Fender-type one-tube gain stage designed around a 12AU7 for lower gain. You are going to have a hard time getting 20W out of that so it may need to be 6L6-based. That should handle your gain issues. For your bee-hive issue, there is ...

It has transformers. Everything is inside the enclosure.

Have you looked at the Fryette Power Station? MUCH cheaper than the OX or the Waza box.

Re: Motown pre amps
A little research points to it not being as much in the chain as it is in the fact that the main guy there was a disciple of the Fletcher-Munson Curves. Here is a snippet of something to try: If you want something exciting and punchy sounding on rock or soul, use it. If you want high fidelity on cla...

Re: anybody else build solid state amps?
Yeah the complexity of some of these circuits don't really lend themselves to perf layouts. PCBs are the way to go. You can get a couple of really nice bare PCBs for an API-style and a Neve-style preamp and a nice power supply PCB for them diyrecordingequipment.com but you need still need to do your...

Re: anybody else build solid state amps?
Very cool. I've been kicking around the idea of doing a high-powered class-D bass amp and I do a pedal now and then but my latest SS efforts have been some studio gear. Recently I've built a few 500-series pieces from kits... DIYRE CP5 preamp with British Colour module (the one with the blue transfo...
