For some reason, the voltage chart didn't post.

Re: Building a mini Super Lead with 4 x EF80

The 6AQ5 is identical to 6V6, just a smaller bottle and 7-pin base. If 20W was too loud, I don't think a pair of 6AQ5 will give the result you seek. See if you can find a pair of EL95. I got mine on eBay for very little money. I think they'd be a good candidate to mate to a Marshall pre-amp circuit....

Re: Need Help with Combo Amp Transformers and Layout

If you don't like the layout there are at least two choices. One is get another chassis. If I were in your shoes, I'd think about fitting a PT near the IEC inlet (rectangular hole) and put the OT next to it -- basically both transformers on the end. This, IMO, will open up many possibilities. When i...

Re: Sawzall fret file

I watch several luthiers on YT for entertainment. (OK, I need to get a life.) My first reaction was, it won't work. This looks like it might be real innovation. IMO, the whole goal in automation is to give relief from "donkey work," which is generally not profitable. It looks like he really gets the...

Re: Parts Source

It's an interesting place. Year's ago I found it. As I recall, they've got a lot of stuff that is almost what we'd need for a guitar amp. Good, but not great in that respect. Still, a fun place to browse.

Re: Wish me luck

Given current labor market conditions, you are likely a shoe in. They probably did a happy dance after the interview. Expectations were low because of the tight labor market. They did the dance because you met the expectations they used to have. HR is getting in the way. This will conclude when you ...

Re: F*cking clients

I sense that you don't want to fire a customer. This, in my view is wrong-headed. This is not a customer you want. OTOH, your reputation is worth something. There is no guarantee he won't badmouth you no matter what you do. If it were me, I'd make my reply as polite as I possibly could. You are stil...

Re: A very cool YouTubes channel

Well...
1) I'm reasonably sure I can't afford one of those ;-(
2) I'm doubtful there's enough time left before I shuffle off to learn to do that.
3) I'll have to settle for watching the series as entertainment rather than as educational.
Superb stuff. Thanks for the link.

Re: Magnatone build

Wow! Just wanted to comment on the obvious to help keep it in mind. A cathodyne (concertina, split-load, whatever) PI has no gain. So, whatever you are doing to the signal, it needs to be done before the PI. It is a really great choice for clean tone. Also, I used a cathodyne in front of a pair of 6...

Re: First Amp Build

In general, a hifi speaker is not a good match for guitar. Hifi covers a full spectrum of sound, often 20Hz to 20KHz. (If you are over 40 years old, you probably don't hear very much above 12-15Khz and by the time you are 70, maybe 10KHz.) Look at frequency for the low E on bass and high E string on...

Re: - The Woefully Misguided Turretboard Stiletto Ace Thread -

I finally looked at the layout. Frankly, a dozen pots on the front panel scares me. I'm pretty sure I'd need a 24" x 8" chassis to get all the parts in it. The cost of the chassis alone may be a discouraging factor. In a factory production situation, they know how to pack things tight that ordinary ...

It would help a great deal if you can tell us about your general background in electronics and whether you've every worked with tube amplifiers. Are you a college educated electrical engineer or maybe you've got some sort of technical certificate or military training? Built any pedals? Do you have t...

Re: Lambda C-480M DC regulated power supply.

I'm a big fan of repurposing stuff like this. You received Telefunken 12AX7s and some RCA, too. If they still have life, these are a true find. (You said "Tesla" but I think you meant Telefunken.) I'd restore the Gibson if it's doable. As for the power supply, if it's something you want to have and ...

This has an excellent section on how to solder...for anyone who might need it. I found it very helpful when I started doing this stuff. Look around page 10.
