Re: Tube amp books

I'm on a Mac and got the 2nd and 3rd books to download and expand correctly but I had to change the file names to get rid of the underscore and three extra numbers at the end. For example one of the files was named practical_amplifier_diagramstubespart1_502.rar, get rid of the underscore and 502. Th...

Re: What's in a Mars Specialist?

The 5E3 uses a "less common" phase inverter - ie not a LTP. Is there ANYTHING about a 5E3 that does NOT fit their description? Very true Zippy, my point was that without seeing what's inside how does he know he's really building that particular amp? If it is a just simple cathode biased 5E3 (...

Re: What's in a Mars Specialist?

There is a version of the Specialist that has a 6SL7 preamp tube because if you go to the link I put in my previous post and scroll down the page and click on the first demo video, Lance Keltner is talking about it and playing through it and he specifically mentions the 6SL7 tube. Not sure if it's a...

Re: What's in a Mars Specialist?

They take an old Filmosound chassis gut it and build a new amp inside. I recall something about Bell and Howell transformers.

There's a Youtube clip out there of Lance Keltner playing one, it does sound really sweet.

Re: Earthquake East Coast

I'm in Virginia about 40 miles from the epicenter in Mineral and it was scary for a minute. Nothing falling off walls or anything but it felt like a really big train or plane was getting ready to crash into the building, it was really shaking for 30-40 seconds or so. I heard this earthquake was felt...

Re: Turrets are a challenge to solder to

I'm getting ready to start this week on soldering my Eagle Supre together.
This build is going to be my first experience with turrets as before now I've only used eyelets so this is very good to know.

Thanks for the head's up!

Re: The Eagle Supre - Big SE Amp

After many delays I'm finally building my Eagle Supre and had a few questions before I get too far along. Has anyone added a second preamp tube for another gain stage (or anything) or tried another power tube for parallel SE operation? I'll build the amp "stock" to start with but I'm thinking ahead ...

Re: FOUND IT!!!!

It's probably not the same thing but it looks very similar to this one from an old Heath kit tube. Maybe a lot of the older OT's looked like this.

Re: Ebay Amp Chassis

Why not buy a chassis from a forum member? http://cepedals.com/Dumble-Style-Chassis.html If I was in the market for a D style chassis I would definitely consider buying from cepedals, I didn't know they were on this forum. I have their D style pedal the FET Dream which is really nice but I might be...

Ebay Amp Chassis

Anybody bought chassis from this ebay seller? A friend of mine got one of the Princeton chassis kits recently. He said it arrived in 5 days from Thailand and the quality was very nice although it does come with the fiberboard circuit board. http://shop.ebay.com/noojwut/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_...

Re: Blocking distortion

I'm at work now and won't be able to look at this again until later but I really appreciate everyone's suggestions. The fact that the distortion is on both channels leads me to think the issue might be later in the circuit than in the preamps unless both channels are coincidentally having the same i...

Re: Blocking distortion

What is your plate voltage and where do you have the bias set? What year was the amp made? Some of the Silverfaces have lead dress from hell. Just checked and the plate voltage of each tube is 438v but for some reason my bias was set really low around 22 so I raised it so it's 38 on one tube and 40...

Forgot to mention the power tubes are Winged C 6L6s that have maybe ten hours on them.

Re: Blocking distortion

Thanks to all. I'm not sure if it's blocking distortion because I don't know what that sounds like, that's what I'm trying to get to bottom of. Can someone describe what typical blocking distortion sounds like or point to an audio clip? I couldn't find one. Firestorm said it sounds like the amp is c...

Blocking distortion

I have an old SF Vibrolux reverb that has been black faced and I recently replaced a lot of the old original carbon comp resistors to get rid of constant crackling, sputtering sounds and the amp sounds really good now except when I crank the volume knob up past 5 there's a nasty bit of distortion in...
