Re: Crossover Help for Elkatone Horn Driver

FWIW, that itty bitty midrange is going to carry most of the guitar frequencies. I don't know much about this stuff, but it seems reasonable to conclude that is why guitarists don't use hifi speakers. Some reading that might help to frame this: https://producerhive.com/music-production-recording-tip...

Re: I like this guy.

I've been watching Ted Woodford for several years. He's got a real knack for presenting his work, both entertaining and informative.
Also, if you like the mortiser, look for Mathias Wandell and his pantorouter.

Re: Checking Bias

If the sizable green resistors are running between pin 8 (cathode) and ground, then clip one meter leads onto each side of the 1Ω resistor and read mV. That is the same as your bias current, as explained above. Draining filter caps is not relevant to checking bias. You need to power up the amp to do...

Re: Epiphone Pacemaker 50T PT short

Do what you can to raise the plate voltage. I'm going to guess 275v is the sweet spot. You won't get that with that PT and tube rectifier. You'll get into the 220's by changing the primary to 115v. For a speaker, IIRC, I've got a Celestion G10L-35 in my Gibson Scout. It was a miraculous improvement ...

Re: Epiphone Pacemaker 50T PT short

I'm late to the party, maybe too late. That Epi 50T is very similar to my Gibson Scout GA17-RVT, also PP 6AQ5. The schematic for the GA17-RVT says plate voltage is 300VDC. With today's wall voltage, IIRC, it is more like 315V. This amp has been in storage for about 10 years, so I'm not sure about a ...

Re: Thinking about moving south

I know it sounds like a joke, but I try to remind folks, be careful what you wish for because you might get it. I understand the motivation. Do your best to choose carefully. At our age, I'm concerned another chance might not come along!

Re: Carvin X100 Schematic Verification and Ultra Hot Cement Power Resistors

IMHO, there is nothing about this amp that shouts out for originality. This looks to me like a clear case of substance over form. Skip the expensive can caps. If you insist on using can caps, JJ makes a 500V 40-20-20-20 for around $20. Leave on 20uf unused and find a 40uf radial cap that works in th...

Anything you do about the rust will involve risk. I wonder how much of what I see is dirt vs. rust? You might try warm water with a drop of dish washing liquid. Don't rub, just dab. Get the soap off with plain water. Try this where is won't show too much.

LOL, you've got to choose your type of interest from a list. I'm now a hifi enthusiast. I'm gonna crank up my 70's era solid state stereo until the Dynaco speakers blow. BTW, those Dynaco's have real walnut veneer.

The $250 Harley Benton DC-LTD I got plays better. In the hands of an experienced luthier, a proper setup of that SG should make it play like butter. Take it to someone in the know. Skip the DIY setup...you know the labor rates: $50/hr for regular setup, $100/hr if you wanna watch, $150/hr if you fi...

Re: hybrid axial radial caps

I've been thinking about this. It looks wrong. I think these are counterfeit. Someone made some Elna labels and did that. Someone should ask Elna directly if these are legit. I don't think the answer will be a surprise.
