Re: What powertubes are you using?

Now that you mention it, I think I remember reading that they were more like a 6L6 but can't remember where.. EVH used Sylvania 6CA7's in his Marshall.

Re: What powertubes are you using?

Welp, since you mentioned it, I put the JJ 6CA7's back in there, and they actually sound pretty good. It's taken me a long time to realize you find tone with your ears and not what you think the knobs should be set at.. I think I'll mess with these for a bit because they're supposed to be the least ...

Re: What powertubes are you using?

I have a set of JJ 6CA7's but I didn't think they worked that well. You can drive yourself crazy splitting hairs on every change..

Really tho, I think the Express is so picky that it has a real narrow window of what works and what doesn't; everything has to be just right.

What powertubes are you using?

I was using JJ EL34L's for a long time, but I now think they are a bit aggressive and bloated for my Express. I put in some China EL34's and things tightened up a bit and not as bright so I could add EQ on the amp. JJ has the regular EL34 that Eurotubes advertises as the closest thing the the Mullar...

Re: RCA 12AX7A

I spend a ton of time on my amps picking preamp tubes that sound good overdriven. Many tubes used in the first gain stage can sound great as they never get overdriven, but further down the signal chain when they start to show there harmonic overtones many can get very nasty and sharp sounding! I ha...

Re: RCA 12AX7A

Sylvanias are pretty "hairy", I think. More so than most 12AX7s I've tried, they seem to be prone to microphonics. You used to be able find them for about $10 bucks a piece rebranded. Hard to find the sweet deals these days. Tube rolling can produce wonderful results. Worth having RCAs, Sylvanias, ...

RCA 12AX7A

Picked up a handful of some Wurlitzer labeled RCA 12AX7A's. They are solid and clear sounding in the Wreck. I like them better than the Sylvania's. They aren't as bright which is a good thing in this amp.

Re: Picked up a Fane F70.

They are similar. Buy I think the Celestion is more pointy, whereas the Fane's upper midrange is more spread out.

Re: Picked up a Fane F70.

That's a Fryette Sig:X on the high gain Red Channel. Here's the same amp on the mid gain Yellow Channel that's more dialed in.

I did a speaker compare with a different amp if you were interested.

Picked up a Fane F70.

Haven't been around in a while, but I just got this speaker, and it works great with the Express. The sound is really rich. I think it's my new favorite for this amp. Same old backing, but the tone is good. I'm using a Silent Sister Cab with a Rockcrusher Attenuator set on -12db. *Edit* I dialed bac...

Straight vs Slant

I was wondering which style of a 412 you people prefer for an Express. I like the looks of a Slant myself. However, I wonder what would be better tonewise with this amp because it's so picky about everything you do to it. I know Ken's cab was a Straight style front loaded Ampeg, but I'm more concern...

G12M vs G12H30 clips

Both of these speakers are from Avatar. The G12H30 is the 70th Anniversary version and was offered by Avatar as the Helatone 30 which is broken in before shipping. The G12M is the Chinese version and I had them break it in as well. I recorded the clips thu a Rivera SS ISO cab with a Rivera Rockcrush...

Re: Another Clip. Tried new things.

Thanks for listening. I have a G12M coming on Wednesday. I'll do a comparo between that and my Hellatone 30. I'm open to some backing tracks if you have any.

Re: Another Clip. Tried new things.

Thanks mang! I have a G12M coming next week to throw into the ISO Cab, so I'll post some comparo clips between that and the G12H. I've never owned a G12M Greenback before.. So I'm curious how it will work. I want to get a rear loaded cab for the Express as I think it will add to the tone of ...
