Re: What makes an amp clean up well when rolling back?

Thats the basic of the PCollen for sure! I understand this entirely, but the Express goes from clean to distortion without a big volume change like other amps. Try going from clean to distortion on a cranked Super Lead, theres quite a volume difference compared to an Express for instance. Thats what...

Re: 6V6 in an Express

because turning your heaters and negative bias voltage down with the B+ is a great idea..

Re: Is there a SE 6L6 Wreck out there?

or run the pre-amp on much lower voltages so it clips earlier this will essentially change the bias point of each stage but I've got a nice single ended wreck I made for a friend that runs on a B+ of about 230v.

Re: Is there a SE 6L6 Wreck out there?

yeah you'd get frequency cancelation, not true silence of course because the sides of the wave form are slightly asymetrical.

In short it would sound like one big horrific fart coming through your speakers.

Bit like a Matchless style crossline MV on a really really low setting.

Re: Is there a SE 6L6 Wreck out there?

litterally build a full PI and only take one tap from one side of the phase splitter to the power tube.

that would be the only way to get that true interaction I guess.

Re: Is there a SE 6L6 Wreck out there?

sure that would work, don't forget to make a fake phase inverter.

No reason you can't use a 6L6 for a SE wreck.

Re: 6V6 in an Express

I don't think the 6V6 sound any quieter but they definitely sound "smaller" in the mix. I use my Express with a 2x10 cab loaded with 10" Tayden Speakers which are very good copies of the old 18w Marshall 2x10 greenbacks. I use 6V6 and 10" speakers to bring the overall punch and size of the amp down ...

Re: EL34's

I've never had a JJ EL34 fail or go bad on me.. they tend to be really robust and low microphonics etc.

Not the best sounding valve but not bad either.

Re: 6L6 or 6V6

I owned a PRS Custom 24, Ten Top, Birds.. Lovely guitar it was the most seamless and playable guitar i've ever played and it stayed in tune amazingly well.

Unforunately it did sound a bit pants for what I paid.

1N4007 power tube socket + 1 Ohm bias resistor question?

When using a 1R resistor on the cathode of the power tubes in an express, can you place the 1N4007 on the 1R or do you have to connect the 1N4007 diodes straight to ground. Just thinking from a cosmetic point of view, at the moment i'm not running any 1N4007 on the power tubes but I want to. Cheers,...

I pretty much get everything I need from these in the UK:

Hotroxuk - Valves, Valve Sockets
Maplin - Switches, Shielded Wire
RS - Tag Strips and Mini SRBP Boards
Farnell - All Electrical Components

Re: My "Twinwreck" Express combo build

are 40w worth of greenbacks going to be able to handle a 35w wreck?

I suspect you'd be better running 6V6s to look after those speakers, I run two 25w greenbacks and do this.

drill a 10mm hole and get a file out for the box nut.

thats how I do it and it's pretty easy work.

Re: Troubleshooting my Express combo build: noise and hiss

Since you've got the PI tube off to the right slightly. You're going to struggle with getting that stable. my suggestions are to twist the anode and grid wires to the PI tube and get them down to the deck of the amp chassis and away from the power tubes. Almost at a 90 degree angle across the floor ...
