Re: Express just blew a fuse?!

Mick, Unfortuntately I think that Dana should chime in here since he designed the VVR. I've installed several and the instructions are explicit in stating that the insulator (pad) MUST be used to keep the metal plate (heat sink) from coming in contact with the chassis. Though it's clear from your ph...

Re: Express just blew a fuse?!

Regarding the Mosfet on the VVR. Even though there's a pad insulating it electrically from the chassis MAKE sure the screw isn't touching the back plate of the Mosfet as it goes through to the chassis. The Mosfet should have come with a small plastic insulating washer to prevent this. If you didn't ...

Re: Finished My Express OMFG

Once again. Thank you for the education gentlemen. Sometimes I just need to be a little less concerned with then numbers.

Re: Finished My Express OMFG

@FYL I've only been building for about 6 years so I'm still quite a noob at this so correct me if I'm wrong. The quiescent plate/screen voltage of the express is more like 420/405. Definitely below the max for a 6L6, but that's at idle. Once the amp gets going that voltage rises dramatically and dep...

6L6GC'S

I'd be concerned about using 6L6's in an Express. The plate voltages in an express are approaching max values for a 6L6.

Don't be surprised if they don't last too long.

Just my $0.02

Steve

Oh... Still would love to see some photos of the amp.

Re: Single-Ended Rocket

RJ,

Yes the recorder's mic has no bottom end, but also the speaker is to blame.

Mark,
I agree there are many many similar circuits out there, but very few Single Ended 6L6 guitar amps. And not any that I could find with the configuration that I chose.

Update

RJ, The owner of the video moved it to a different location. I've updated the link above and posted a gutshot. (ignore the diode. That was an failed experiment that I left on the board unattached to anything.) I certainly believe it has a lot of that Rocket "3-D" sound. Especially on the cleans, but...

Different Amp

Sorry Structo. Different amp. I just finished this one a couple of months ago.

Single-Ended Rocket

Thought you guys would be interested in this... I built this amp for customer in Canada. I call it the Torn Sun Dark Star Mk II. He posted a clip on YouTube of his son playing the amp. It's a Rocket front end with dual inputs where the second simply parallels V1. Then into a 6L6GC. Operating in Clas...

Re: Same loudness with 6v6 or el34's?

Also to reiterate what Ampgeek said...

I'd also recommend (you mentioned having it built) getting your amp built with one of Dana's VVR circuits so you can vary the power of the amp.

regarding loudness

simple answer... "In general" a doubling of power will get you a 3 db increase in loudness and vice-versa. So with EL34's you're getting about 35W out of the Express. With 6V6's you're getting about 20W. So it's less than a doubling/halving of power and hence less than a 3 db increase/descrease loud...

Source for Rocket Transformers

I had exactly the same problem a couple of years ago. I wound up buying a couple of sets directly from Phil at Heyboer, but it cost me a little more. At present I would recommend RJ (rjuitars). He is sourcing trannies since Toneslut has gotten out of that particular business for the time being, and ...

Bud Carrol

I recorded Bud at a small music festival in Northern PA a couple of years ago (Wheeliefest). He wasn't using a wreck then, but he had a great sound. He was using a borrowed Quidley head and cab combination from Justin Fox of Medusa Stone that day. Attached photos. He impressed me for being so young ...

ground lugs

As I recall those lugs don't work on the PEC pots. They're too short to reach around to the back of the pot. There were some others available at one time that are long enough but those few who have them are holding on to their very limited supply. I had quoted (through my work) having them custom ma...
