Re: Amplifiers being played

Got another prototype put together . Hi gain jcm800 inspired circuit with a few twists and turns . Only 50 watts and really grinds . Surprised it sounds decent , because this one together using nothing but random parts … …just kidding , every component was selected specifically for each position wit...

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

I think you're having a Ground Hog Day here Charlie, but your last line about sums it up. You are convinced that differences in sound appear when different resistors of the same value are used. That's based on your experience, and it's your belief. The evidence that you might be wrong is 1) human h...

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

[ After a person accepts a certain belief, it is difficult-approaching-impossible to get them to change it. The more evidence they see to the contrary, the harder they cling to their belief. Who are we are talking about in this forum ? What contrary evidence to what claim are we discussing here? Wha...

why i need to do something for the others.. and loosing time in discussion after.. it is counter productive  I just imagine I am talking to myself learning how to do this. Pearls before swine ? Perhaps , looking back it was good I experienced so much naysaying , I had to cut my teeth like you ...

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

To me, it fails a couple of logical tests. First, "recipe". Yep, a resistor we buy is made by a resistor maker according to a specific process. But it's unlikely that a manufacturer (= brand) only uses one recipe. Yes Every manufacturer makes several lines of resistors, and even within the brand/li...

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

Equivalent series inductance makes the impedance of a resistor plus ESL higher with frequency. The frequency where the inductive reactance equals the resistance is taken as the critical point of its filtering. The frequency were that happens is F = R / (2 * pi * L). I did a quick look for the self ...

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

And, if it's all in your head, who cares? The client . Hard to eat when what you are selling is simply all in your head … I personally have never convinced a player that something sounds preferable or different if they didn’t think so themselves. I can’t make people feel good if it doesn’t sound ri...

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

Not really. induction differences alone is enough to consider potential differences between brands . Can you describe what, exactly, you mean by "induction differences"? Is that magnetic? Inductive? I'll have to see what you call "induction differences" between brands. If you mean the magnetic indu...

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

And yes, a few comments in another thread set off my "gotta measure it" alarm. The contention was that one could make an amp have a certain tonal character merely by using certain brands of resistors. So - can you really make an amp be midrange, or percussive, or whatever, just by changing resistor...

Re: Todd Sharp amp (121) some musings/ideas

I had not considered the Cathode follower application , but I think HAD was more inspired by Ampeg SVT than most realize , especially when it can to anything remotely SSS related , ie 121. Look inside an old SVT and you will see mostly Draloric resistors and that familiar preamp design with the boar...

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

Metal film resistors are not all equal in noise, and this has been measured. Whether it's audible by humans is another question, since they are in general so much superior to CF that the difference between MF's seems negligibly small. That might be a explanation I won't rule out. If it’s the noise ...
