Re: Express vs Asteroid? Komet?
Yeah absolutely the divider reduces gain. You go from the Express configuration which is basically no divider allowing full signal through, to the Komet voltage divider that cuts signal almost in half. I have no first hand experience of an actual Komet though so can't comment on tonal differences, b...

Re: Express vs Asteroid? Komet?
It would retain the cleanup if you changed the divider between the stages as well.

Re: Express optional gain mods?
An idea I've pondered but not tested is creating a voltage divider between the 2nd and 3rd gain stages. Right now you should just have a 150K resistor to ground. Perhaps try two 82K resistors in a voltage divider configuration instead to bring the gain down. Or I believe earlier modded Fenders that ...

Re: Friedman Twin Sister Circuit?
No it's on the stage before the cathode follower and I can't honestly remember I'm afraid. Would have likely been gearpage.
What you're looking at is a capacitor used to shave off some high end.

Re: Friedman Twin Sister Circuit?
I believe it's a cathode bypass cap on the last gain stage. I think Dave said so on one of the other forums.

Re: Late to the Trainwreck party, gonna build one anyway.
Your EL34s will run a lot hotter than they would with the 1K resistor. With that 6.6K OT the screen current draw shoots up a lot and the 1K resistor helps with this somewhat by restricting the current flow. This is why you get a slight sag and compression with the Express due to the large voltage dr...

Re: Effects loop for SV20ish amp
It's unlikely to sound good in the SV20 loop depending on how you run the amp. If you run it for overdrive then the amp will distort the reverb and delay which will again sound crap. The loop sits between the preamp and poweramp and most of the overdrive comes from the power amp. What sounded bad ab...

Re: New JTM style build project questions
Just something to bear in mind is you'll lose clean headroom using 6AQ5 valves. They will be driven into overdrive sooner than KT66s, 5881s or EL34s. And I don't just mean lower volume (You'll only drop by maybe 3-4dB going to smaller valves) but the amp will distort sooner on the volume control com...

Re: Amp Crackle
Finally had a chance to look at this properly. Turns out, it’s not the amp at all! It’s my attenuator. Played through my JTM50 on the edge of breakup, exact same static crackle. Will dig into the attenuator another night but hopefully it’s just a loose connection.

Re: Rebuild into a Dumble
Yeah I was going to lift the bypass cap on the second stage but I think this may change the tone and gain structure too much. Found out Andy uses a FET boost. I may just revert to the PAB boost, was just trying to find a more elegant solution.

Rebuild into a Dumble
I am going to be rebuilding one of my amplifiers into a Dumble, likely the 102 circuit but I'll be subtracting/adding some things due to chassis space and what I need. - Accent switch instead of pot (with internal trim pot adjustment) - No mid switch - Built in buffered effects loop - 6V6 output sta...

Re: Simple passive output attenuator design questions
Just a warning regarding 100W L-Pads, they will burn out with a cranked 50W amp. I can't remember the ins and outs right now but the more you attenuate with them the less power you can send into them. I had one years ago a guy built for me and he even had a divider before the L-Pad to shave off 6dB ...

Re: Amp Crackle
Sorry for the very late response all, been quite busy, intended to start looking at this again last weekend but I then fell ill. Typical! I can't take oscilloscope recordings with the software, only images and I was testing into a reactive load. The capacitor I'm using for my Vox Cut Control is a pr...

Re: Amp Crackle
I’ll have to wait until next week to test the OT, will need to replace the bias resistor to test otherwise I’ll be running a single 6v6 a bit hot! I have checked the speaker output with my scope though and it looks perfectly normal, distorts pretty evenly on top and bottom of the waveform. Also chec...

Re: Amp Crackle
Also used my scope to check for oscillation and I can't find anything. And I tested again with the cut control, it is affected by it but only very slightly.
