Re: 5E3 clean headroom
THe moment a sound comes out of it, it is already going into OD territory. Have you tried running the amp into another speaker, one that you know is working perfectly well? I just had a tweed Deluxe here last week, it was in the trunk of a car when it was rammed from behind by another car. It sound...

Re: JJ 6L6GC
I like the KT77s as well for a slightly different take on the 6L6GC vibe. Same here. I've been a fan of JJ KT77 since I bought my first batch in 2006. Was working on a couple rare Burman amps that had rattly old beat-up *real* Genelex Gold Lion '77s. The JJ's worked in them, no problem, and conside...

Re: Can you increase girth without increasing wattage?
Nickerz, what did "they" use to quantify girth, whatever that is ? ? ? Inquiring minds want to know. Did they also measure swirl? Did they examine the crystal lettuce and publish reproducible results? And who are "they" anyway ? ? ? Damn critical thinkers ruin everything. How right you are xtian. I...

Re: Why is this?
I think ol' Bengt must have slipped when entering the sale price. $350.00 seems more in line. Considering his shop's location, could it have been part of the backline for fabulous hitmakers The Bay City Rollers? Well then, it would have provenance! $35.00 would be appropriate then.

Re: Can you increase girth without increasing wattage?
Sure! Play thru two 4-12” cabinets even with a 50 watt amp, it will be a experience you’ll never forget, I guarantee that 100%! Agreed! Make sure those cabs are wired for the same polarity first... Meanwhile I have yet to encounter a girth-meter. Nickerz, what did "they" use to quantify girth, what...

Re: Jim Kelly amp at goodwill
Seem to recall in my old 80s GP stash, one of his interviews Holdsworth said he used one briefly on part of Metal Fatigue or some mess like that =\ Mr. Holdsworth was also witnessed playing Sundown amps. They were supposed to be the next big thing. Another manufacturer who fizzled out. They were su...

Right up there with "Okayyyy, Boomer!"
Good luck to that "somewhere else" our fearless fosdick brings his amp fixit queries. He sounds like a hopeless case to me, with an amp to match.

Re: 2205 Repair Questions
Tube socket discoloration looks to be between pins 2 & 3 - a much more likely spot for an arc. Pin 3 = plate typically 450-500V and likely spiking higher when amp is driven into clipping, which is how Marshall players often get their signature overdrive tone. Pin 2 = filament, practically at ground ...

Re: Rectifier Tube Swap
The resistor on pin 8 should check in at 225 ohms. How does it test out? To me even if it does test out at 225 that’s too low and will caused the outputs to idle high ( ie draw a lot of current) and make the power transformer run hot. I would change this to a 250 ohm 5 watt resistor. Also the 50 uf...

Re: Rectifier Tube Swap
a 5Z4 that you could cook a steak on, & the tranny seems to get real toasty as well I doubt there's improvement to be had by swapping out rectifiers in your amp. With the PT & rectifier getting (over?)heated, I expect you're getting all the POWER it can possibly generate. But power isn't gain. Wher...

Re: What is the most aggressive transformer you could put in a superlead, and why in your opinion?
IMHO they are more aggressive with lower voltages than higher. Other circuits may benefit of higher supply voltages. Try both. Settle on what satisfies the ears. Still easier & cheaper than swapping OT's. And I'll wager, more effective. I keep in mind what Ken Fisher did, dialing in the response of...

Re: What is the most aggressive transformer you could put in a superlead, and why in your opinion?
May I? Marshalls with higher voltages in the preamp are IMHO the worst sounding ones. Something around 280-320 V on the PI is the perfect range IMHO, and where it was supposed to work. Other circuits will benefit from higher voltages. You sure may! And I agree with your observation. But what's plea...

Re: What is the most aggressive transformer you could put in a superlead, and why in your opinion?
I owned a 1959 back in1970. The b+ was 560 volts. It could maintain clean to a point And brightness. On a resistive 8 ohm load I would measure 160 watts after doing the math with a lean sine wave on a scope. (Probably 10% distortion clean) I remember measuring later Marshall’s at 480 volts. They wo...

Re: Gibson EH-185 amp porn - nearly mint condition
What is the glue she's using on the filter caps? In that situation I'd have used hot melt but that can get messy. Hot melt not recommended in amps. WHY? They get hot inside, surprise! Hot melt doesn't have much glue power anyway. I see it spuzzed all over the insides of some amps, mostly Peaveys. W...

Re: Gibson EH-185 amp porn - nearly mint condition
I watched another video where the earth lead of a replacement power cord was attached to a transformer bolt, along with some other ground wires. These types of things are just not good practice. Not good practice, you're right about that. But how many factory wired Fenders have their grounds attach...
