Re: KT88's any good for guitar?
Because you like the way it sounds better than a pair of 88s at 90W. Because you like the way it sounds better than a pair of 6V6/EL34 at 23W. Not everything is about efficiency... and given the other ways people blow way, way too much money on ineffective crap in builds, it's not fair to call drop...

Re: KT88's any good for guitar?
I think my scope's pretty accurate. And the sheets I have put the KT88 at 42 watts. When I checked it I had everything balls to the wall with a 1 volt 1Khz sine signal. It was hovering around 22 watts. Of course I'd never get that in actual playing, nor do I want it (he's got a big brother for the h...

Re: KT88's any good for guitar?
I've got a single ended rig with an 88 that puts out very close to 23 watts. It sounds pretty good but it's all happening up front - the 88 never gets close to being pushed.

Re: sound comes back for a moment after standby turned off
I'll give G a try. I've been using a full B9th with the low F# to make it fat.
I'm just curious why one amp does and another doesn't. Maybe it's just that bottle of Merlot talking but still . . .

Re: sound comes back for a moment after standby turned off
Okay, I've wondered about this for some time. Merlin's fix looks good to me but I have not seen it in Marshall schematics, at least not in those I'm familiar with. I have a JMP2204 (borrowed) and my own sort of replica ala Jana(ish) of the same. The differences are not in the PA section. When I turn...

Re: KT88's any good for guitar?
I use a KT88 in a single ended design. It sound Great! But in my design the tube is not pushed anywhere near distorting; all of that is done in the preamp. I have not tried pushing a pair (push/pull) hard but I have read that they are really best for running clean, at least in the power amp section....

Re: Gathering input for big bottle rocket build
I recently chose to make such a replacement in a design I've been working on and found this useful:

It has nothing to do with guitar amps but gives you the math needed (simple) for the conversion. It worked great for me.

If finances are against the VVR you might consider a PPIMV which leaves the PI tone intact.

Re: Unauthorized 8.1 Upgrade
The bastards at Microsoft have god complexes - want to say they "own" the OS you pay too much for. Man, if it was more versatile, I mean if more of my stuff would run on it, I'd switch to Linux in a heartbeat.

Re: Jack Bruce
This man has been one of my earliest and most lasting influences. I am driven to play to this day, and it's because of work of only a very few people a long time ago. Jack is very near the top of that list. His remarkable playing and unforgettable voice continue to inspire me and always will. My con...

What models is it? Crates are prime territory for modders, and some do benefit greatly from it. But whether the modder knew what they were doing is a crap shoot.
