Re: ODS Head Cabinet - Basic Crossbar Questions

I wouldn't - with the Titebond series the glued joint is stronger than the wood around it. I made a wild headcab for the Dallas Guitar festival a few years back that has three strips of padauk running side to side and edge glued maple running front to back. Those are all load bearing joints unlike t...

Re: ODS Head Cabinet - Basic Crossbar Questions

Hi Don,

If you're going to tolex the cab screws and glue would be fine. Personally I'd just glue it in with Titebond and forget about it.

I believe the cross piece was more of a decorative element / transition from the cloth face plate to the amp.

Re: Fiddleback Maple JMP 2203 headshell

Very ballsy router work. That's where I would forkup and need an emergency repair method to save the work... and have to stat over. Great looking cab! Thus the 'art' in woodworking - artfully fixing the f*ckups. The '77 got the nod for the new home as it sounds great. Old shell.jpg I use many templ...

Re: Walnut Fattbaby

I'm looking for a location to do some volume testing in central Tennessee. I certainly miss the 18K sqft facility I had in Dallas. Russ 2.9K sq ft in Old Hickory available for volume testing. Just need to kick the wife out sometime - and she's scrappy.... Sweet cab. Is she bribable? That would be a...

That is a great looking cab! I've got some Sapele I plan to make a small chest of drawers from - great wood. My hat is off to you for the hand cut dovetails!

Re: Fiddleback Maple JMP 2203 headshell

So let me get this straight. You freehand routed the script? Very freakin' cool. 8) I'd bet that the test "M"s are done freehand by router but the facia was done with a template. Did I win? Free hand on a pencil lined drawing. I made a paper template to keep the proportions correct - though I was c...

Re: Walnut Fattbaby

Lovely. What will you do when you're completely surrounded in shiny wooden boxes? I have about a dozen amps stacked into a walk-in closet. I take naps in there sometimes... They're all on display - I live in a mancave. Occasionally I trade or sell some but like your amps they do tend to breed... Russ

Re: Fiddleback Maple JMP 2203 headshell

In the end I shoulda used 2X more tinting powder but it serves its purpose. Dyed black and sanded back for the under color. Faceplate black sanded.jpg Dyed scarlet, lacquered and the piping added. Faceplate sealed 2.jpg Stuck in the headshell. Left side.jpg Closeup.jpg stack.jpg Still needs feet, a ...

Fattbaby is done - save for the handle. Grill 3.jpg Cabs r.jpg Here is the back dyed orange. Re: Walnut Fattbaby

Aside from continuing to show that cab bottom side up <kidding> it looks great. (I can't help myself, thinking I'd like to see the padauk stripe on top. Error correction very nicely, gracefully done!) Will be interested in what you think about the sound. A thought, you can always cut an interior ba...

brewdude wrote: Fri Jun 12, 2020 3:47 pm I'm confused, isn't the logo on the front valence which is not dyed?
The plan is to do the two tone dye job after I fill the logo with silver tinted epoxy. The piping may get some silver rubbed on and sealed with lacquer so it sorta blends with the logo.

Walnut Fattbaby

On TGP there was an interesting thread on cab resonance and Zilla cabs was referenced particularly their Fatbaby. I've never been convinced of oversized cabs do anything like the gushing claims I've heard for years so this was a good time to build one. And a 15" wide piece of figured walnut [and pad...

I've got the case dyed and finished but ground to a halt on the logo filling. Dyed and waiting lacquer. Lacquered.jpg Here are some sunlit pics and they barely do the finish justice. Lacquered 2.jpg Lacquered 3.jpg The logo was killing me as I really wanted to use a silver filler but the epoxy absor...

Re: Fiddleback Maple JMP 2203 headshell

Question ………….. do you use the RIT dye in the same manner that you'd use analine dye for wood? Anything to be aware of using the RIT dye instead of analine? I use a piece of tee shirt and rub it like it owes me money. If you get streaks take a damp paper towel and gently wipe to pull up the excess....
