Re: Does shielded wire really kill your tone?
just be aware that depending on how you ground and route the shielded wire the capacitance can have a much bigger effect. shielded wire used in guitar amps is not really comparable to shielded wire in an instrument cable. With an instrument cable the shield braid is an essential part of the circuit....

Re: power supply filter board on top of power tranny
every other place that you can put the power supply filter board is pretty much the worst ever place.

Re: well that sucks. headphone trick issues
Yes, both transformers should be contacting the chassis, the chassis should be grounded like it normally would be through the ground of the power cord. Yes, you can hook the OT up to a regular speaker and the hum you hear from that will be the hum that you get when the amp is built (provided you do...

Re: well that sucks. headphone trick issues
you know after you fire it up I doubt it'll be that much of an issue at all. the pushpull power stage will cancel out most of the hum. You just want to make sure you output transformer leads don't cross your small signal leads so just push them towards the other end of the amp. But for future refere...

Re: well that sucks. headphone trick issues
you should turn the power transformer.

Re: how do you route your PT wires?
if you really want to cover all your bases you can lift the wires up and over between the sockets like aiken does.

Re: how do you route your PT wires?
I use 18.
The only other size I can get cheaply is 22 or else I'd use 20.

Re: how do you route your PT wires?
I usually run parallel lines and elevate with a humdinger, 100ohm matched resistors. I twist the wires with a dril that need to go from the transformer to the first pins of the power tubes. Then I'll twist again to go from the power tube to the preamp tubes. The thing about the slo is that there's n...

Re: how do you route your PT wires?
their base level of hum with no cord in the input isn't any more then any other boutique amp. off the top of my head I know that bogner and mesa don't twist either. There's almost no difference between a sloppy twist and no twist. There's way too much focus on heater wiring when it's not that big of...

Re: how do you route your PT wires?
there's actually negligible hum reduction unless you make it to six turns per inch. I'm not saying that those amps will hum... I'm just saying that unless you get at least 6 turns per inch and minimize the enclosed loop area between the two wires there's no reason to twist at all. You can look in Me...

Re: Speaker Ohm and combinations information!
it would be much safer on the transformer to run a 16ohm load then a 4ohm load.
the 4 ohm load will put stress on the output transformer even though it should be relatively safe.
You might want to check the sensitivity of the original speaker to see if it would even pair well with the crex.

Re: how do you route your PT wires?
that komet isn't that great at all. they might as well not twist the wires at all. It should look like this... http://www.aronnelson.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=9372&g2_serialNumber=2 any info you need can be found in this thread... http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/tubes-v...

the airbrake presents the same impedance.
It's not reactive like a speaker at all.
