Re: Asteroid unpleasing distortion
Sorry - hadn't seen your post. My current assumptions: I believe the first stage works fine. I looked through the internet, and found other images of a single string plucked on an oscilloscope. It looks quite similar to mine - WITH - the added bumps that doesn't seem to be there on mine. I do wonder...

Re: kometious astroid 60w build - question about bias resistor
It sounds interesting, but what are the differences between the standard 60 and the HD?
Just solid state rectification, 220uf main caps and nothign more?

Re: kometious astroid 60w build - question about bias resistor
nik's caps are 100uf. I'll install 4 80uf mallorys soon. (i just have 3 of them now) I'd leave the 100uf caps in there. Allyn has indicated the 80ufs cause ghost notes. Would you mind trying to give a deeper explanation of this? I''ve recently built an asteroid that generally can sound good, but ha...

Re: Asteroid unpleasing distortion
Yeah, the final stage does drop that.
You can see my voltages in the excel file I linked in page 1

Re: Asteroid unpleasing distortion
well, thanks a lot for being persistent! :-) Anyway, since I'd read that a komet 60 were meant to accomodate both el34 and 6l6 among others, I assumed that I could plug the 6l6's in with no modification to the circuit. Seems other people do that - and I think I read that the guy who made the demos u...

Re: Asteroid unpleasing distortion
uhhg.. anyone have photoshop.. maybe we could fix it with image editing.. Is there any possible way a single strand of shield is touching positive.. or a preamp tube is loopy.. or you are near a gamma emission source.. or someone has a horse tranquilizer I could mix with liquor? Heh, thanks for the...

Re: Asteroid unpleasing distortion
unfortunately, that didn't solve anything. The scope still shows the same. I reconnected the tonestack to check the sound, and the buzz is still there.
Here's the scoping - I put the two waves together for close comparison;

Re: Asteroid unpleasing distortion
We don't care! Delete that biotch and let's hear it! :) Mark's questioning if it's installed backwards.. I do believe. Lol :-) I shall henceforth delete her, and see if it intensifies her beauty.... :-) I do believe it's installed correctly - you can see it on the first gutshot I linked, back on pa...

Re: Asteroid unpleasing distortion
Yeah, actually I have wondered about why that diode was put in there.
Anyways, my probes can't handle that much voltage, but I can try using caps.
Maybe just try shorting it with a short wire, and see.
Although, I do wonder why noone else would seem to have these same problems then.

Re: Asteroid unpleasing distortion
ok, got around to it again today. I've disconnected the whole tonestack from the first stage, so now it's just 33k gridstopper, 100k plate, 2k7+.68uF on cathode. I soldered a 100nf cap to the plate, and in the following shot, yellow is the grid, and light blue is after the 100nf cap from the plate. ...

Re: Asteroid unpleasing distortion
You input signal follows a pattern down/up/down...down/up/down... The first down is not displayed because your scope triggers on the upward swing. But the next two are the repeating waveform. It's quite possible I'm wrong, and please tell me if I am, but what I'm thinking is this: Techniacally you ...

Re: Asteroid unpleasing distortion
It seems to me, that the spike is actually the guitar signal being amplified. Looking at it - it repeats going all the way from positive to negative. However, all parts of it going from negative to positive sort of pauses in the middle. Thus the downgoing signal has a larger "movement" all at once t...

Re: Asteroid unpleasing distortion
Made another scoping: Yellow is guitar input, light blue is grid on second stage, purple is phase inverter input and dark blue is across ot seconds. DS1Z_QuickPrint8.png It seems that there's a spike that gets clipped by the powertubes, every time the guitar signal goes straight from negative to pos...

Re: Asteroid unpleasing distortion
Yeah, it seems like the top peaks gets amplified without clipping, but the bottom ones clip. From the image, I’m guessing the output of the PI isn’t clipped, even though one side is slightly larger than the other (a little weird to me, since I could hear the distortion in the PI when I used the head...
