Re: 3 stage overdrive - some problems

Glad you're pleased with it. And unfortunately you're right, you will really struggle to get an ODS sound out of this given it's a completely different gain structure. But a turbo charged bassman is not a bad sound at all!

Re: 3 stage overdrive - some problems

I still think you're sending way too much bass into your second stage and cutting too much treble. Start by lowering the .0047uF off of the first stage to .001uF to bring the bass down. For the treble start by clipping another 220K in parallel with the one going into your second stage. If you like t...

Re: 3 stage overdrive - some problems

I have just looked at your tonestack and your 100K lead volume pot will be loading it down a lot and really affects the response. Seems to drop the bass a bit and raise the treble, could be why it sounds so trebly. Could you swap that 100K pot with a 1Meg? Or maybe even stick a resistor in series wi...

Re: 3 stage overdrive - some problems

I used to think like that, but found it does change the tone of the stage removing the bypass cap and it's harder to overdrive as you say. You'd be better off adjusting your voltage divider after V2A if you want less drive into V2B. Edit: I also think you're cutting a lot of treble for the level of ...

Re: 3 stage overdrive - some problems

Bypassing the cathode on V2A would make it easier to overdrive.

Maybe use this as an example, I've never played one in person but in videos the clean channel sounds pretty awesome.

Re: Marshall Amplification SOLD

Quite sad in a way, they were one of the few family owned British companies left. I'm sure Zounds will take care of them though. I think the surviving Marshall family members are still the largest shareholders, so maybe it will still be in good hands. They only hold 24%, so I don't think they get m...

Re: Liverpool EL84 cathode bypass cap value

Mike's layout shows the second preamp stage cathode bias at 1k5/22uF where in the Liverpool and Express, it is 2k7/22uF. The RC low pass after the second stage in a Liverpool is typically 1-2n2/68k, not 150k. And as mentioned, the power tubes are biased as 130R/220uF per pair of EL84s. What about t...

Re: Liverpool bass reduction?

I thought you may have been losing too much of the lower mids with all the bass cutting you were doing, that's why I asked you to put another 2.2nF in parallel, to see if it got you closer to the sound Pete was getting.

Have you got any gut shots of the amp you can share by the way?

Re: Liverpool bass reduction?

What if you clip another 2.2nF in parallel with the existing 2.2nF between the 2nd and 3rd stages? Interested to see if you get closer to Pete's sound or if you feel the bass situation becomes much worse.

Re: Liverpool bass reduction?

I think the Bass pot is meant to be a Linear taper 250K. I'm a bit concerned that there could be something else wrong here, as with a 250K Log Taper bass pot and an already big low end cut with 2.2nF and 68K you should have a very lean amp right now. I actually thought it sounded a tad trebley in th...

Re: Liverpool bass reduction?

What values did you use for the tonestack? Have you checked your wiring? Do the controls all work how they should? Same for the presence.

How about this clip? Does your Liverpool sound similar to this?
