Re: VVR Circuit Schematic

Flood, what the wattage rating of the MOSFET means, is that it is the maximum dissipation at 25ºC - which means, that you need to keep the MOSFET at that temperature, to be able to do that. In other words, you need a big ol' heatsink - and probably a fan too! whoops. ok, time to make some m...

Re: VVR Circuit Schematic

i have a quick question - i used an IRF840B based VVR (albeit one without a heatsink because i figured the dissipation would be tiny as compared to its max spec) to scale only the power section of my 2061x w. switchable diode and tube rectification. it worked fantastic for a while... then! I think i...

Re: Necessary safety features

these are various safety features i've done in the past, will probably end up applying them all together: 1. 3 prong cord, chassis to earth pin 2. switch before transformer primaries 3. fuses on both sides of the transformer - primary and HV secondary (in the CT ground path) 4. bleeder resistors acr...

Re: Does this metal base GZ34 look bad?

Sometimes the phenolic base holds carbon trace where it flashed over. if your lucky it will be on the out side and you get after it with a small wire brush but otherwise if the devise is misbehaving under normal conditions its no good. But it should still hold a little value to a collector looking ...

Re: Does this metal base GZ34 look bad?

How does it perform when you plug it into an amp? If it performs OK, then I'd say you state your observations in the eBay ad copy and let them decide if they want to bid. Just tell the plain truth. I find that is what gets the most bids. People don't like it when the seller appears shifty. hi phil,...

Does this metal base GZ34 look bad?

Hey there guys, Need a spot of help - while this tube tests up quite strong on my simple B&K 650, there is some heavy flashing gathering at the bottom. Is this a sign of a dying tube or something? I'm putting this tube on eBay, was wondering how to describe it correctly. inputs would be greatly appr...

Re: New To Forum - Interested in learning the ropes of tube amps

hey there joel, welcome to these pages! i've been a member for a couple of years, and i can assure you that i had very little knowledge about tube amps before that. there is a LOT of information on these pages and practically every thread, old or new, contains something useful or something new. to s...

Re: $60 caps?

Most of that 60 bucks is due to the cap being in the original packaging, just like an old Star Wars action figure..... it's kind of a rare thing. However, for the sake of argument, it stands to reason, to me, that you could hear the "tone" of a cap just as much when it's passing treble to ground as...

Re: Where to place carbon comps

Would the same process happen in a carbon track pot? Most modern pots are built to a price point: cheap. Molded carbon, Cermet or plastic models are usually still really good but cost from 10x to 50x more than a basic Alpha Taiwan. i just installed conductive plastic pots made by BI technologies in...

Re: Overhaul of 60s Italian Steelphon Conductor

ok, just got lucky with a schematic of the AB165 - it seems that R19 and R20 are a local NFB provision. i'm wondering what would cause one of the resistors to drift so much... i'm going to omit them for starters in an attempt to make things a bit more raw. i can add them later if i really feel the n...

Overhaul of 60s Italian Steelphon Conductor

EDIT: the first 4/5th of my post seems to have gotten chopped off entirely! i have absolutely no idea how that happened, but it can't be helped now. here's the gist of it again, or whatever i can remember: ----------------------- back when i was a student in germany, i was bemoaning the sale of my f...
