Re: Clean vs Distorted Wattage
RMS wattage is mathematically defined and makes good sense to me. Much more relevant than peak wattage IMO. I'm not sure why RMS wattage doesn't exist? Peak power. Continuous average power. At what frequency? The term RMS watts was dictated by the FTC to rein in power claims by amp manufacturers (H...

The schematic would be better with the water analogy. I'm sure you remember how well that turned out.Reeltarded wrote:Do you have a schematic?
Feel better sooner, Bob.

Re: Clean vs Distorted Wattage
I sent a 1Khz Sine Wave into the front of the amp, plugged it into an 8Ohm Load, adjusted the controls until the signal coming out was clean and then measured with my multimeter. For the distorted I did exactly the same thing except I dimed it :D. I can't remember what calculation I did exactly but...

Re: Clean vs Distorted Wattage
How exactly did you measure/determine the clean and distorted output power?

In light of Dave's passing I want to say thanks to the members here for sharing a passion and being 'friends'. I will probably never meet or speak to most of you, but I consider you friends. When I pass on, there will most likely be no notification about what happened. There simply will be no more p...

Re: boredom
Boredom is an interesting philosophical concept. And please don't take what I am about to say as an insult, but I believe boredom is a character flaw. It seems it is based on how we perceive time and what we do in response. An active mind is important. Just the act of thinking about why you are havi...

The 5E3 has four inputs and two volume controls? What did you build?

Re: 5E3 Build Questions?
I scaled the whole amp. Scaling just the power section is not the way to go IMO. A couple caps will stop the pot scratch. I used Dana's VVR. He has detailed set of instructions in pdf form.

Re: 5E3 Build Questions?
It's a great amp. I love mine. Build the original, then reduce the bypass caps to get rid of the flub if you like. Make sure you explore the volume control quirks before you decide whether you like it or not. It is not a clean machine. Gets kinda clean, but not squeaky clean. VVR works great in that...

Re: Theft?
There is the law. There is ethics. Those don't necessarily overlap. The quote below is from the Kearns Wiki. ("It is idle to say that combinations of old elements cannot be inventions; substantially every invention is for such a 'combination': that is to say, it consists of former elements in a new ...

Re: Rivera interview
I'm not a Rivera fan. I had a Concert II that had good cleans. The OD was bad on its own, but it was much better when the effects loop was jumpered and the extra gain stage was used. In that configuration I could use it without being bummed out. :P The inside was a fucking mess. Probably not his fau...

My bandmate has a 350. It never gets used. Reverbs are poor IMO.
