Re: Whose got a extra set of KF NOS Rubycons?

Eh, I have a few I pulled from an 80's keyboard, but I wouldn't trust them as far as I can throw them. I'd offer them up but they're in Austin and I'm not. A lot of people have been down this road only to find that such parts really don't make a difference, like at all. They aren't in the signal pat...

Re: Silvertone 1484 Tremolo/Reverb Question

You'll be fine without those tubes as far as damaging anything is concerned. The reverb is probably the transformer which I've fixed on quite a few of these old Silvertones. The thin, dinky leads eventually break and there isn't much you can do to stop it. You can circumvent the transformer and tap ...

Re: Silvertone 1472 Had Issues - Better Now

This is my experience with eBay, they go the extra mile to take care of the customer if you follow the rules (buying and selling, knowing the system well will save you the most headache and money). I've rarely been on the bad end of a purchasing deal, but I've had plenty of sales that didn't go well...

Re: Kirk Hammett has bought PG/Gary Moore "Greeny" LP

Good on him! Quite a lineage that guitar has already had. I've got to spend a decent amount of time with a friends real-deal '59 LP and it really is a special guitar. Like a classic car where they just got everything right and it looks the part, sounds the part and sure drives (plays) the part.

Re: Silvertone 1472 Had Issues - Better Now

Yeah if that's the case then go through the eBay return process and insist that the seller pay return shipping. It's his responsibility to make sure it's arrives at your place in the condition it's described in. If it isn't, eBay buyer protection does a fantastic job of covering your expenses as lon...

Re: Silvertone 1472 Had Issues - Better Now

First thing I'd check is that 220Ohm cathode resistor. Those sand cast resistors are infamous for failing either intermittently or completely even if they look OK. Also could be a speaker issue. I fucked up a little bit recently and thought a similar sound was the yellow Astron caps in an old tweed ...

Re: Silvertone 1472 Had Issues - Better Now

You sure the caps are actually leaky and you aren't reading some voltage from the next stage tube grids? I assume this was shipped meaning all sorts of bad things could have happened. Post some pics of the amp as you received it, maybe we can spot something? Doesn't sound like the seller is trying t...

Re: Just bought a whole mess of wire...

Don't need thermal strippers for Teflon, just a pair of clacking strippers with well built and sharp jaws. I don't know where to get these cheap, but I'll be damned if they don't work flawlessly on Teflon.. http://www.newark.com/ideal/45-640/wire-stripper/dp/93F8754?CMP=KNC-GPLA Damn Cliff, those a...

Re: Johnny Winter

A real Texas original too. I've always looked up to Johnny and was honored to see him even if it was only after his years of hard living had more than caught up with him. So cool that he was still pushing himself to tour and I believe he was truly enjoying himself up there. RIP Johnny.

Re: Dealing with pickup squeal at the amp.

Nice point with the PCB amps. That eliminates the conductors themselves (wires) cross-coupling and making unwanted sound. Silver mica and ceramic capacitors are notorious for singing if not dampened properly. Might be something you need to chopstick with the guitar plugged in and the amp on the verg...

Re: Dealing with pickup squeal at the amp.

So you are dealing with a pretty sensitive, wide open input stage. You might just have a lead that need to be moved, maybe in the tonestack or early in the preamp. Think Express, I know it's not that platform but it's the same lineage in a lot of ways. My Express will flat out scream at me still if ...

Re: Dealing with pickup squeal at the amp.

Shielded wire might help and is a better suggestion than what I was going to mention (band-aids - essentially strapping some capacitance across the preamp plate resistors to reduce high frequency response). My suggestion will quite literally neuter an amp however, especially when you get to the poin...
