Re: Is It The End of Days... For Building a Rocket?

I've been able to keep a supply of Heyboer Rocket trannies around. Heyboer has always been much easier for me to work with than Pacific. The last couple Rocket builds used the same Pacific power transformer as the Liverpool and then added a separate 5V for the rectifier circuit. IIRC the output was ...

Re: Rate the Express output transformers.

Here is a look at the Express I built using Edcor transformers. As somebody mentioned the Edcors are cosmetically nice looking and they are also unique in their blue color.

Re: Rate the Express output transformers.

I've put Edcor output transformers in an Express, a 15W Liverpool, and my own Rockster amps. If there is such a thing as "Too HiFi", that applies to the Edcor in the Express. It had a bland simple sound to it. I liked the 15W version a lot better... can't tell you why but it had a pretty cool distor...

Re: Rate the Express output transformers.

I finally got an order confirmation from Pacific and they are going to sell me the traditional product that I've had in the past. I'm not planning to offer them off the website or ramp up the business end of things but for folks that want the old spec Pacific Wreck trannies I'll have some around. I'...

Re: Rate the Express output transformers.

Does anyone know what voltage a person might have expected from the wall 20, 30, 40, or 50 years ago? My understanding is that it has been creeping up over the years which begs the question about what the ideal rail voltage might be... or maybe does it matter? I posted this before and it's a good re...

Re: Rate the Express output transformers.

Also I don’t understand why the power trans is the wrong voltage and does not have a 5volt tap for a rectifier tube that is used on the rocket The HV taps should be 300-0-300 Not 280-0-280 Very strange to me That is something that I have studied and believe I understand. If you are familiar with "L...

Thanks for confirming that. I know the original guys on this forum were meticulous in their clone work and it seems unlikely that everybody would have missed this.

Re: Rate the Express output transformers.

That is a good sounding clip. I hear nuances of some Dokken in there. George Lynch was supposed to be one of the early Trainwreck users so maybe you're onto something there. Thanks for posting that. The sound difference I hear between a Mercury Magnetics OT and a Pacific OT in an Express circuit is ...

Re: Rate the Express output transformers.

The kind words are appreciated... I learned a lot from those that went before me and I'm still a student searching for missing pieces of the puzzle. What I think is true is that the primary and secondary windings of an output transformer are provided to us as ratio that is typically based on the 8 o...

Re: Rate the Express output transformers.

Here is a look at the Heyboer PT that was used in tens if not hundreds of Wreck clones before the Pacific's became readily available. Note that it actually uses the Pacific part number.

Re: Rate the Express output transformers.

I found a few notes... it was a K&M part number that they originally were selling to me as a replacement tranny for Wrecks. I have a copy with a hand written note that says 300mA but I can't say who wrote it. I have a similar spec sheet on the Pacific trannies. Both of them show a 6.6K secondary on ...

Re: Rate the Express output transformers.

... My recollection is that 300mA was the correct spec. Do I have that correct, or are we now getting more confusing info from PacTrans... I'd say absolutely so! However, the 100mA rating might not matter if the wire they are winding with and the leads they use for the HV can handle that load. When...

Re: Rate the Express output transformers.

I've tried the MM and a few others... MM was one of two at the top of my list, but it sounds different than the OEM Pacific. It might not be for everybody because it adds a little something to the traditional Express sound. My ears thought it was not quite as raw and simple as the Pacific, or you co...

Re: Rate the Express output transformers.

At some time around 2008 when I first started to gather info and learn about amps and Wrecks in particular, the standard for a Liverpool build was generally said to be a Heyboer with a 5.2K secondary. In later years that belief seemed sorta shifted when it was clear that the later Liverpool and Expr...
