Which 6V6 for Express?

Thanks to everyone who contributed to my OT question for my Express build. It's up and roaring now . It's got a few build twists (I'm funny that way 8) ), and as soon as I get the cabinet finished, I'll post some pictures. This thread is about 6V6s. I've only ever used EL34s for my Express ...

Re: Pacific OT/Express - hookup?

Thanks, everyone... The pacific wiring is noted in the layout file here. Pay attention to the notes on the pdf at the bottom as the picture is for the older heyboer unit i believe Which PDF and which notes are you referring to? I had those pactran wiring diagrams already, and I don't see any notes i...

Pacific OT/Express - hookup?

I'm FINALLY getting around to starting my long-dormant 'proper' Express build. I'm using one of Allyn's chassis, and a set of Pacific iron, also purchased from Allyn. Question: The pactran wiring diagram for the OT posted by rhinson (thanks!) shows the secondary wiring with the gray wire being the 1...

Re: Bassman Hum Problem

You didn't say anything about this, but I'll bring it up anyway, because it something I (and many others here) deal with: What's the wiring in your house like? In the past year, I moved to a house with older wiring, and the room that all my amps are in has 'dirty' power. Amps that sounded nice and q...

Re: Pyramid Strings

So if I'm playing .011 to .049 now what does that work out to ? JustStrings.com has a perfect match of round wounds but some of the customer reviews mention the same gauge feeling lighter due to the higher quality of materials. Any suggestions ? I've been a convert for about a year now. A couple of...

Re: Telefunken EL84 replacement?

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread. Interestingly, the info on the Groove Tube numbering helped a lot. I ordered a pair of '7'-rated tubes from Antique Elec, and the following day, the pair of Tele EL84s that Phil_S offered me arrived (thanks, Phil!). So I got to compare them back-to-...

Re: Rear vs. front loaded cabinet

...so you could install T-nut both ways. I've had that passing thought in the past... have you ever done that? What trick did you use to make sure the t-nuts line up? The t-nuts have to line up perfectly when they're seated in the wood or the screws won't go through both. Or did you use short screw...

EL84 anti-fizz trick?

Once upon a time, I heard about some trick done with a Zener diode and a resistor in series, that are then put in parallel with the 220k resistor to ground on each signal lead going to the EL84s. (The 220k resistor value is just an example, based on something most are familiar with - AC30 and the TW...

Re: Telefunken EL84 replacement?

4 is a GT rating for current. Their scale is 1 (soft, draws very little current, distorts early) to 10 (hard, draws a lot of current, stays clean). GT ships two EL84s : the S version is made by JJ in Slovakia and the R by Reflektor/Xpo-Pul in Russia. Thanks!!!! That current rating information is VE...

Re: v1 flashes at power up?

The original Made-in-Holland Amperex Bugle Boys do that too. Those are my fave tubes in V2 of a non-MV Marshall and in the Top Boost section of an AC30.

Re: Telefunken EL84 replacement?

There are no new current production tubes that I am aware of that harness the smooth and rich tone of the Telefunken. Yeh, that's kind-of what I've been afraid of. I've tried a number of modern tubes in the EL84 amps I build for myself and my customers. I got myself a set of Groove Tubes-brand EL84...

Telefunken EL84 replacement?

Since a few individuals misunderstood my question the last time I put up a thread here, I'll try to make my question really clear. I have a '63 JMI copper-panel AC30 with Top Boost added. Still has its original May '63 Alnico Blues, and is my 'desert island' amp. In THAT amp, my favorite EL84s are g...

Re: "Recording Out" hook-up, anyone?

Not ttying come off the wrong way, but I'm not sure why you made this post in the first place? so far ever idea that has been present has been dismissed as wrong. you obviously have your mind made up so just build the amp and be done with it. What way are you trying to come off? It almost so...
