Re: Pedals in front of a rocket.....

My two favorites are a homemade OCD and a four knob GE fuzz with the roger Mayer mods.

I'm curious about the hotcake and maybe the zen drive.

This thread needs some clips!

Re: What EL84's do you like?

Thanks for the responses. With regards to the Russian Saratovs, aren't these still in production as the Mullard reissue EL84M? If so, has anyone compared these to the older production?

What EL84's do you like?

I bought a quad of Electro Harmonix EL84's on a whim and they're not really doing it for me; they don't really have that vox-esque, chimey-crunch. I was using the cheap Sovteks before, but they're a bit muddy and unreliable.

Is there a clear winner in the new production tubes?

Re: Second Rocket Style Build

All Done. I like this amp. Has a different sound from the first Rocket I built. A little heavier sounding turned up and better bottom end. Very useful sounds. :D What did you do different on this one? Mallory pvc caps on this one, Sozo on the first, carbon film vs carbon comp resistors on the first...

Re: Express lead dress

Hi! I've found it helpful to think of the lead dress in terms of what is negative feedback and what is positive feedback. The plate is out of phase with the cathode and grid so if you run those parallel, you're stabilizing the amp. Avoid positive feedback by crossing at 90 degree angles, etc. I am ...

Re: Something wrong with Express?

Did you check that the 1 meg resistor on the input is 1 meg? When you change the volume on your axe, you the output impedance. Check your cables, too for no resistance between tip and sleeve. If you can dime all the controls with no oscillation, you've got the wires where they belong. The tambourine...

Re: Fully Loaded Rocket

Yes, I fell off the grid for a number of months due to moving and a new day job, unfortunately. Hopefully will be warming up the soldering iron and getting my flux fix again.... I know the feeling man. It is a constant push! I'm going to be moving myself soon. I'm working on four amps right now. Tr...

Re: Fully Loaded Rocket

Whooo! Home alone and the perfect time to do something stupid like record myself noodling through the EF86 and top boost channels dimed! All quick and dirty with a strat. My dog became very frightened at the ferocity of the SPL's, so I had to keep it short; would have liked to do a few more takes an...

Re: Express Output Waveform Shots

I spent some quality time with my scope and a couple amps. Firstly, looking at a LTP, 100k plate loads, 24k tail, 744 ohm cathode, no negative feedback, into a post pi master, taking out the grid clamp. It would clip on the bottom first, then widen as the signal was increased. This widen was on both...

Re: Express Output Waveform Shots

No, the pi is pretty symmetrical. You can see both sides looking at the output from the output transformer. Any imbalance in the pi would be apparent in it's linear range, too, since we're talking about a voltage difference/ac imbalance. It clips when it hits the bias voltage on the positive swing, ...

Re: TW Express clone with a Post PI Master Vol...

Something to keep in mind is that the power tubes do not clip in the vast majority of guitar amps with ac coupled long tail pairs. It's a phase inverter distortion reached when the ac swing exceeds the bias voltage, 0 volts on the power tube grid, "diode clamping" of the signal, etc. So, it's a sort...

Re: Fender 75-Entertain Me

Yes, I've got 1k screen resistors on mine since it has got EL34's in it. What I did was a lot more work than I initially anticipated, though! I ended up with something closest to the Dumble Bluesmaster preamp, skipping all the switches, but the bright on the clean channel. I added a 12 volt transfor...
