+1 on the 6P14P-EV The EV tube is rated for more hours than the standard 6P14P, took more abuse, too.

Re: 6SN7/6SL7 and DC Heaters

http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/instruments-amps/251971-power-scaling-2.html On my own amp I used PP 6V6 with 6SL7 in preamp and concertina phase splitter. Preamp is a London Power Standard but with 6SL7 in lieu of 12AX7. Used AC heating with pseudo centre tap, DC elevated. Hand drawn schematics lin...

Re: 6SN7/6SL7 and DC Heaters

Good luck! I will be following this as I would someday like to build a all octal amp. I'd like to build an early Bassman some day or other Tweed. I don't think they should get DC heaters automatically. Fortunately, you can build the amp with AC heaters and if you can't conquer a hum problem, then b...

Re: VVR in Overdrive Special

Cool, after being involved with power scaling for many years I would suggest that not only the change in power tube voltage affected the tone, but also the change in preamp voltages too. I find that the change in preamp voltages to be the most dramatic in tonal change. Having regulated rails can he...

Re: quieter Dumble for recording/small gigs

CW is right, and since the idle current will be nearly half of what it is with 6L6's installed, the anode voltage will only increase further. Miss-matched by one step you'll be running 8k4 primary impedance, which may not be enough to keep you out of the red zone with "ordinary" 6V6's. The JJ's are...

Re: quieter Dumble for recording/small gigs

Having built my two lovely amps a 50w and a 100w they're both quite loud when turned up to their sweet spot. This is fine on a gig or in a studio where I can isolate the amps but for smaller gigs or recording with an ensemble I'd get more use from a smaller wattage amp. So to my question. If I take...

Re: Fender/Marshall Dual channel build ideas needed

So I have a request to build a head that has two channels. One in the vein of a Fender Blackface "clean" style and the other more gain oriented in the Marshall style. Also reverb. Is there some prior art on this design somewhere already done by someone that is a known good circuit? I think ideally ...

Re: Attack Site Warning?

Wow, you typed all that out. A screen shot would have been easier. If you google some amp query that takes you to TAG you will get that, which I'm very much sure is scaring off non-regulars. Not good, plus the only work around is to cut and paste the URL which these days is like taking the bus. Oth...

If a company called Keyser Söze Amplification pops up selling amps without providing any contact info, it's not me.... Hi, That's interesting to know, but shouldn't this be in technical discussion as a new thread and in Garage Talk? Just saying. Best regards, Steve It was just a joke, Steve. No nee...

Re: JJ EL34 II Review

I just bought these valves for my TW Express as I wasn't very happy with the tone I was getting from the TAD EL34B-STRs and I thought I would do a review for everyone. As soon as I started playing I immediately noticed a big increase in clarity and aggression in the mid range. At last I have got th...

Re: Attack Site Warning?

I don't get any such warnings with either IE10 or Google Chrome. Re: Safety Compliance

sobering (and depressing) posts. So should all DIY guys who sell what they build as a means to continue their building hobby just quit selling? Related question if I may: would it be less of a legal hassle to offer parts kits rather than fully assembled amps? A craftsman who makes rocking chairs as...

Re: Safety Compliance

I've been reading this thread over the past week and it honestly scares the shit out of me... the thought of being personally liable for an amp I built on my own time scares me to no end. Even if it is some small .0001% chance of it ever happening. That's the Big Stick in the USA legal system. Don'...
