Re: help! kt66 5e3 build hum...

Hey guys, Good news! I fixed the problem. It turned out to be the first 2 caps grounded at the same point as the output/power section. I regrounded them to the input jacks and voila! Thanks to everyone who helped and gave suggestions. I am kind of happy that there was a problem as now I have learned...

Re: help! kt66 5e3 build hum...

I rearranged the wires around the preamp tubes. Didn't fix the hum but looks neater.

Re: help! kt66 5e3 build hum...

Ok so the hum comes through even when the volume is off and the tone is up. Also comes through either channel. This would mean it's grounding in the preamp somewhere yes? Which 2 filter caps are the first two that were mentioned I should change? Sorry I am kind of understanding but not which specifi...

Re: help! kt66 5e3 build hum...

There was no pop but a small buzz and every time I was touching any pin with the chopstick it was sounding like high pitched metal chinging. Only on the first tube not the others which is why I was worried. I did ground the output jacks but it made no difference. I did work off the ceriatone layout ...

Re: help! kt66 5e3 build hum...

Ok so I fixed the grounding and some solder points. After resoldering pin 2 on v1 (first tube I hope that's right) there is still a hum when I touch it with the chopstick. I have also noticed that touching any of the pins I can hear it through the speaker. Does this mean the tube has gone microphoni...

Re: help! kt66 5e3 build hum...

Ok so I am not exactly sure which part the centre tap is. Haha. I really am trying to figure out what everything is but it is taking a while. Little help? I just did a search but only found people talking about whether a ct should be grounded or not.

Re: help! kt66 5e3 build hum...

Hey thanks for the replies. I think I did it backwards as I have most of the other wires raised rather than the filament wires. They look touching in the photos but they are not really near each other at all. Is this still alright to do or should I switch it to the other way round? I will do it anyw...

Re: Liverpool as first build

Nah I am not scared away. My girlfriend told me not to be stupid and build the liverpool. (she's not too bad at keeping me honest) Haha. So in a way I got scared back... I have been reading heaps for the past year about amps (dave hunters book, some kevin oconnor books, heaps of internet) although s...

Re: Liverpool as first build

Thanks for the advice guys.

I guess I will start with a 5e3 to get going. I have found a lot of information for it and have had a lot of people say its a good first build.

Although I am really gasing for a TW I will be back after my first build. Thanks again and I really look forward to being back

Liverpool as first build

Hey guys, I am a long time lurker around here and have read heaps of information. I am thinking of building a liverpool as my first amp build. I have read numerous posts here and elsewhere saying that a trainwreck circuit is not a good idea for a first build. I actually thought that it would be a go...
