Re: (almost) first build advice needed - TW inspired
so, kicking this dead horse after a LONG time - i rewired the input stage so that i could get a bit more gain and crunch, low and behold, what do i find? it turns out that instead of putting a 220k resistor for the V1 plates, i'd used a 2k2 instead. how the hell did it work for this long? anyway, V1...

Re: New build - supercharged Atomic 16 - heater questions
that's a fantastic suggestion, paulster. i think i'm going to double check my wiring and give this a shot.
it's amazing how much one learns on these forums. thanks!
here's a preliminary shot of the guts so far:

Re: New build - supercharged Atomic 16 - heater questions
I think you also don't realize that you are burning up over 200W through each regulator with your current configuration! These regulators can't dissipate more than 10W max which for 6V at 1A means that the biggest input voltage you can have is 16V. You need to either find a low voltage, high curren...

Re: New build - supercharged Atomic 16 - heater questions
hmmmmm....
ok, how about this: i power all heaters off the 3.15-0-3.15 supply and use the DC circuits ONLY for the LEDs/relays? there is probably no harm in leaving those unreferenced, i suppose? or will it cause the relay magnets to go mental and switch at warp speed?

Re: New build - supercharged Atomic 16 - heater questions
Here are the schematics for the preamp and the DC supply I was talking about. I have a board etched, drilled and ready to go.... It actually struck me that I could simply bridge 3 of the regulators and run ALL the filaments all that - by my calculations, i will lose about 30% current by using a brid...

New build - supercharged Atomic 16 - heater questions
Hey all, am about 50% done with this build. It also serves as an experiment with part pcb construction. The circuit is pretty much stock atomic 16 with the addition of an extra pentode gain stage for OTT gain as well as a fully buffered effects loop. I have a question though - my power transformer s...

Re: One board amp
preliminary shot of the atomic 16 guts... will be giving this little guy his own thread once i'm done and know the results. the preamp, FX loop and PI components are all mounted on PCBs, as you can see; the unnpopulated PCB at the back is for all low level DC circuits - relays, LEDs, and dual triode...

Re: One board amp
those are fantastic guts. i'm building my soldano atomic 16 clone using FR4 (only 1/16", sadly) as an experiment, but not as a one board amp - the sockets are chassis mounted and there is no PCB for the power section. i am a bit pessimistic about the way this build will turn out over time (bombay is...

Re: Choke related question...
I appreciate this also,..... explaining chokes in the power supply. Some amps do and some don't. Why just one, and why is it always in that position ? I am happy to read a link(s) and do some searching, but I don't get much further than a GENERAL detailed explanation of what a choke/inductor is. I ...

Choke related question...
so i went to my local transformer winder and seems she had data for chokes in her dusty old catalogue, but can only wind them to 10H. amperages between 50mA and 250mA are possible. I'm a bit confused with regards to chokes - could i actually use a 10H choke in place of, say, a 40H JCM 800 choke? or ...

The thing to realize is that this information has commercial value. The companies that make these things are in it for profit, and revealing their proprietary data and methods, especially knowing that it will be passed directly to an off-shore manufacturer who might be able to produce competing par...
