Re: Vox-like builds
Kiteflyer- Thanks for the feedback on that. I have no experience with the actual amp itself, just what I can glean from the web. I think his point is that most people use the tremolo channel and that notch filter is what gives it the characteristic "honk". But I don't know if this is true or not, so...

Re: Vox-like builds
Someday I am going to build an AC30 and I came across this guide to repairing them that has a bunch of info including layouts: http://www.thevoxac30guide.com/ It was worth much more than the $20 it cost. My 2 cents: If your gonna build an AC30 you gotta use the cellestion blues and building only par...

Re: Time for a display of the vastness of my ignorance
Skybolt my ingorance is much more vast than yours. I found this thread interesting and I have a question that is sort of related. I built a plexi and I wanted to internally jumper the channels. I looked at the signal path of using a patch cord on four inputs and it seemed to me that I could do it wi...

Re: what software/card to use for recording to PC?
You can get an impedence matching transformer, like this one: http://www.samash.com/catalog/showitem.asp? ItemID=16386&ovchn=YAH&ovcpn=Yahoo+SSP&ovcrn=16386&ovtac=PI&AffiliateID=330 to plug into your sound card. As far as backing tracks goes, I make my own with cakewalk using Beta Monkey drum loops ...

Re: More fun with grounding..
DrZ400, would you mind posting the scematic or giving a complete description of the DC heater supply that you mentioned? I have a high gain amp that I built, it's a plexi with the Hoffman hot switch, and I have put alot of time into trying to reduce the noise and I am just not satisfied with the res...

Re: layout philosophy question
FWIW, increasing the voltage rating by placing caps in series will extend their life. From Aiken's site: Capacitor life is directly proportional to the ratio of rated voltage/operating voltage. If you run a 500V cap that has a specified lifetime of 10,000 hours at 250V, it will instead last 20,000 h...

Re: Book recommendations, anyone?
Thanks for that cool link Motorboot. I think Weber's other books, Hip Vintage reference and Tube Amp Talk are worth reading, after you know enough you'll know how to filter out the B.S. in his writing. Here's some websites that helped me: http://tone-lizard.com/ - Controversial to some, a must read ...

Re: Power supply capacitors
Well, I removed the second filter and replaced it with a 20U, so now my filter string is 110U, 22U, 22U, 22U, 22U instead of 110, 110, 22, 22, 22. I found out that the answer to my original question, and that is, yes, you can have too much filtering. After I replaced it the humming that I was gettin...

Re: Power supply capacitors
Spinoo, I don't think that the momentary inrush of current with larger than normal preamp caps should cause a PT to fail, there probably was another reason why it did. Having large filters on the preamp stages is unneccessary though because after the second cap in the chain the rectified voltage is ...

Re: Work Area
My workspace started out as my computer music workstation, now it's covered in amp stuff. Does anybody just build one amp and then quit?! Anyways, don't use a metal table or chair for that matter, and use one arm when poking around in it when the juice is on. If your workspace has flourescent lighti...

Re: Power supply capacitors
You're correct that you can only go so big with a tube recto or you get motorboating. My amp is solid state. I'm really looking to find out if there is some reason tone-wise or performance wise that you shouldn't have 2 big filtering stages in a 50W amp. The amp works and has a tight bottom end whic...

Power supply capacitors
Can anyone tell me if there is such a thing as too much filtering in a guitar amp power supply and if so why it is bad? I built a 50W plexi with 5 filtering stages, the first two are 2 X 220Uf in series and the last 3 are 20Uf, but I am thinking about changing the second stage to 20Uf because I read...

My chassis arrived in the mail today, and I just wanted to say that it was worth the wait. It's a work of art and I can't wait to get started on my build. Thanks Funk!

Re: zappa?
Hello everyone, this is my first post to this forum. I have been lurking here for awhile, absorbing (or trying to) so much cool info on amp building and I noticed this Zappa thread and just had to respond to it. By the way, I would like to thank Dogears, and Norm and Bob Et. Al. for all of their con...
