Definitely agree with sluckey! Not only will this likely make a noticeable difference in what you are hearing, different speakers make a large difference with this and other circuits.
Nice work!

Re: Bucking Transformer
Definitely prefer bucking transformers to a Variac-type solution. Smaller, lighter, no chance of accidentally raising voltages, less chance of failure.

Re: Rocket / Build
Yes on the coax and for sure these need the bottom plate.
Hiss is usual, but not as much as with an Express or Liverpool. Hum should be very minimal. Headphone trick for transformer placement is always advised.
Tube rolling has a big effect.

Re: Want to build an Express
Build a Liverpool if you like the EL84 chime and tone and cathode bias. The Express has the chunkier EL34 tone and fixed bias response. I have both and they each bring their own thing to the table.

Re: Effect Pedal building
I used to build my own pedals many years ago when my wallet wouldn't allow me to buy commercial pedals, and only recently have I bought some of the newer pedals. Having been dissatisfied with many of them, I decided to give AION a try - they make some great boards and kits. I've now built 4 of their...

Re: Canadian Rocket build
Bepone: those are smaller ID for screws - you can see them in my top photo at the various grounding locations. I use a bunch of those, and yes, the teeth are much better than the smooth pot grounding collar in my photo, but I don't have a photo of the toothed version I have on hand. Dave: I have a b...

Re: Canadian Rocket build
I've done the same thing with many different amp builds, but after my first TW build I went away from the buss wire to local distributed grounds for each filter node, and the amps are extremely quiet. To ground the pots, I use pot grounding tabs that are like large star washers with a solder tab, an...

Re: Rocket / Build
I've built 2 Rockets with dual HT and never liked the sound with the higher voltages. Try it for yourself, though you will probably just end up keeping it at one voltage, possibly the lower.

Re: Rocket / Build
I use F&T caps, with 80uF for the first cap. I also use a board, rather than gluing the caps to the chassis, though I did one build that traditional way. I also built one with can caps because I needed room for reverb and other stuff inside, but not my preferred approach, based on effects on tone an...

Re: Rocket / Build
No worries, Ace! This is an often discussed and debated topic, and I think the best thing we can say is that there are different OTs that work well, and some that do not. It is disappointing that Pacific maintains their position in light of all that folks here were able to determine many years ago -...

Re: Rocket / Build
Ace: to clarify my previous statement, as I recall, Allyn indicated to me that Ken used a Dynaco A-470-S for at least one build, but later transformers made for the Rocket did not have the screen tap for ultralinear. In essence, the correct transformer is similar to the A-470-S in all other respects...

Re: Rocket / Build
When I built my first Rocket, Allyn told me the Dynaco was not what Ken later used, though all OTs he used had 4k3 secondaries. Allyn did not elaborate beyond saying later transformers did not have the ultralinear taps. I built several using transformers bought from him, and they sound incredible. S...
