Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

And lately reality needs dithering, or more bias to calm it down a skosh.* I think more negative feedback. *from Japanese sukoshi [skoh shee] meaning "a tiny bit" Kore wa nihonese des ka? I remember little of the Japanese I learned as a youth in Hawaii. High bias voltage, Negative Feedback, and a r...

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

Distortion.. how does your amp growl. Listen to Nirvana All Apologies pre-roll. You hear tape, but you also hear the machine noise of several open tracks. When it plays on the radio I shiver. DSOTM in the most dynamic spaces has a different machine noise. It is not over-biased and it is a different...

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

A second principle effect, like the residual 60Hz in the tweed Bassman affecting the tonality? I guess that can't be ruled out. I was thinking of noise as just noise. I should accept that things are seldom so simple.

So that's why they sound like that!

Re: What do you believe regarding the sound of passive components?

I thought differences in dielectrics was settled science and the debated issue was, could these differences be heard. Or rather, how to test subjects conclusively to prove to those that can't hear differences, that these differences exist as some can reliably detect them.

Thanks for the thorough explanation. The grid leak is 15k rather than 1M.

Re: Tube effects loop

I guess I'd have to see your math. This loop uses a cathode follower topology doesn’t it?

Re: What's for supper?

I use my Kamado twice a week year round. I just work faster when it's near freezing. The wife can't eat filet from a pan anymore. It has to be slow smoked and reverse seared. In the last 20 years I've ruined her pedestrian tastes.

Re: Tube effects loop

It's not about the gain per se. The 12DW7 optimizes the driver and recovery functions.
The AX side provides high gain for the recovery signal. The AU side provides a low impedance output capable of driving the cable without high frequency loss due to cable capacitance.

Re: What do you believe about the sound of passive components?

That ìs too true. All of the minutiae I obsess about to get the response I want is mostly hidden in the mix. The feel is still important but the qualitIes i love about my tones are not likely audible to anyone except in solo passages. And so it goes.

Re: New F&T 100uf 350v caps: Tip Of The Week

I like measurements. They help me quantify what I experience. I wish I had that spectrum analyzer R.G. had, that function of my Rigol scope is limited. I agree anything real can be measured. Maybe not with the gear and process available to all of us, but it can help identify and filter out the varia...

Re: Why it sounds different.. ?

I have this, I think, very well built JTM45 clone. It was made buy Stephen at Trinity amps. The work looks impeccable, the parts look right... But it sound very different from another good JTM45 clone I previously owned. So your trying to find component level differences in this amp compared to a cl...

Re: Cap across PT Secondary..

Old topic I'm sure, but I can't really find a definite answer for a Tube Amp.. I have a 2 phase Rectifier. The Schematic has a 10n Cap across the Secondary for noise. Okay, cool, but I have a pack 20! Is there any audible benefit to also running them in parallel with the Diodes?? The caps across th...
