Re: 3 stage overdrive - some problems

if you want to add a SS device, you can also use it as load for the second triode in gyrator configuration, and then go to the EQ, instead of adding it as source follower. I'm not familiar with what you're proposing. Can you kindly provide a schematic? So far, I've been pleased with using the mosfe...

Re: 3 stage overdrive - some problems

Here's how I would probably approach the idea ................. not saying this is "better" simply stating this would be my thinking on it based on what's worked for me in the past.

Re: 3 stage overdrive - some problems

I apologize for being late to the discussion. Yrs ago, I wanted sort of a bassman/marshall preamp topology going into an overdrive channel. So, I made the D'Mars ODS. I built several of them and really liked the amp alot. I thought it had a reasonably transparent tone. I don't know why this approach...

Re: EF86 driving an ODS style tonestack?

You can use a mosfet cathode follower after the EF86 and then the OD tone stack. I can NOT tell any difference in tone between a tube triode or a mosfet as a cathode follower. Google "mosfet follies" IF you are wanting to just experiment with a pentode in an OD section, I'll offer this idea and you ...

Re: My 18/9 Watts ODS

That is a remarkably well done build!! Bravo!

Are you enjoying the tone? How is the idle floor noise? Is it quiet at idle?

Re: CF in SE?

If you look closely, I used node D for the 100k plate resistor. I used node C for the 82k cathode follower resistor. Compare the listed voltages on each of those (plate vs. cathode) to one another. I did not try a lower value cathode resistor. I have on occasion, found a CF to seem to add some compr...

Re: CF in SE?

Has anyone tried a cathode follower in a single ended amp?
Yes, I have. https://soundclick.com/r/s86rcl

Re: Smallish "Jazz" amp build ideas.

Why the single ended approach? Is that to keep the wattage low? If the reason is keeping lower watts, ................ how about a 6BM8 power section with LTPI for maybe 7-9 watts? I'll toss out an idea for your consideration ................ I'm not suggesting that you "should" do this. Use a Princ...

Re: Single Ended Amps - Opinions

IIRC, .............. I think Mat's first prototype was an HRM version using a 12Ax7 in the overdrive section. He then switched to an EF86.

I don't remember which amp was used in recording the soundclips? Maybe Colossal knows?

Re: Single Ended Amps - Opinions

To my ears ............... this is the coolest sounding single ended amp I've heard. It's Mat's mini-HRM that he shared with us many yrs ago. Sorta a Dumblish SE amp. Mat is from Finland and just an incredible guitarist. Haven't seen him post on TAG in a long long time. Miss him being here! If I had...

Re: Next Build: Modded Blackface Vibrochamp

ExpressSCH for Windows and J-schem (Apple) are FREE programs that are super easy to use, very intuitive and there are 100's of SCH schematics and layouts already drawn that can be edited and modified. There is a component library already in the program. Having said that, you can open someone's schem...

Re: Next Build: Modded Blackface Vibrochamp

What is the difference between the one and two tube reverbs? And can I add a dwell control on the front end like in the one tube option? Did you count the number of 12Ax7's in the schematic I posted? If you used a one tube reverb, what will you do with the left over triode? I usually prefer ...

Re: Dumble Ripper layout

If one wished to experiment with perhaps a little fatter and chimey-R OD tone, one could consider a 5879 pentode with a mosfet cathode follower. I have used a 5879 in the the OD channel of a number of amps I've done that were dumblish-inspired. I like the tone. Just a thought to consider. Not saying...
